Kemp, Philander on song

The Nashua Cape Cobras beat the Nashua Dolphins by 14 runs in their Standard Bank Pro20-match at Newlands in Cape Town on Saturday, thanks to a career-best bowling performance by Vernon Philander, a triple-strike by Rory Kleinveldt and a brilliant all-round performance by Justin Kemp.

The Dolphins, left with a fairly innocuous target of 117 after the Cobras finished on 116/7, were bamboozled by Kleinveldt (3/23) and an inspired Philander and were dismissed for a paltry 102 runs in the twentieth over.

Philander took 5/17 in four overs.

He caused havoc after an initial burst of three wickets in five balls by Kleinveldt.

Kemp resurrected the Cobra-innings with his 59 runs off 43 balls and powered them from a precarious 44/5 to 116/7.

His five sixes and a four in the final stages allowed the Cobras to score 56 runs in the last five overs.

The Nashua Dolphins looked on course for their first victory of the competition before Kleinveldt engineered their downfall with three wickets in one over.

He had Daryn Smit well-caught by Henry Davids at square leg for 16 (23 balls) in the seventeenth over.

The ever-present Kemp snatched a superb catch close to the ground at mid-on off Kleinveldt in the same over to send Kyle Nipper packing.

And Kleinveldt bowled Johan Louw two balls later as the Dolphins plummeted from 77/3 to 80/6 in the seventeenth over.

Kleinveldt again intervened in the next over when his superb catch at the third man boundary off Philander send the dangerous David Miller back to the pavilion.

Miller looked in ominous form while he and Smit added 43 runs off 41 balls for the fourth wicket to take the Dolphins to 72/3 after fifteen overs.

The young left-hander slammed 26 off 26 deliveries with two sixes.

But his untimely dismissal left the Dolphins without a clean hitter to chase down the mediocre Cobra-total.

Kleinveldt, with 3/23 in four overs, was superb.

Kemp bowled very well and finished with 1/12 from his four overs.

Earlier, it was Kemp who featured in a 67-run partnership off 45 balls with Justin Ontong (16, 19 balls) to save the Cobras from a total below a hundred.

The left-arm spinner Nipper captured 2/10 and Louw added 2/18 in four overs to reduce the Cobras to 44/5 before Kemp intervened in spectacular fashion.
