It's Pro20 time!

Cape Town - Knights all-rounder Ryan McLaren has described the Standard Bank Pro20 series as “arguably the most important competition of the season for all teams”.

He was speaking at the 2010/11 edition of Cricket South Africa’s (CSA) premier domestic competition launched in Johannesburg on Tuesday.

“A few years ago the Pro20 series was just a hit and giggle. Now, everyone wants to get to the final to compete in the Champions League Twenty20, but there is also an exciting and dynamic element for the players as well. We’re looking forward to this competition and hopefully we can give fans value for their money.”

Highveld Lions captain Alviro Petersen said: “We are really looking forward to building on our limited overs success from the past year and our aim this season is to go one step further and lift the trophy.

“We’ve got a well balanced squad to work with and we have been bolstered by our new members Alfonso Thomas and Gulam Bodi. We have the capabilities to do well and now it’s time for the players to come to the party and play to their potential.”

This is the last time Standard Bank will sponsor the competition, and CSA CEO Gerald Majola says it’s been a good innings.

“The Pro20 series is no doubt the crowd puller and this competition has had many successful years. It is also a platform for young stars to make their name with the hope of making it big on the international stage. The top two finishers in the Pro20 take part in the Champions League Twenty20, which sees the world’s top franchise teams battle it out for Twenty20 glory.”

“This competition has received the best possible support from Standard Bank and their immense ability to innovate and with the accolades to prove it. This competition has been at the forefront of "sportainment" and CSA is confident that, with a strong platform, it has the ability to become even bigger.”

“It has been an incredible journey since the launch of the Pro20 series in 2004, and we have been delighted with the response from South African cricket lovers. Introducing the format seven years ago helped revitalize the domestic game, and set benchmarks internationally for social media, digital interaction, television, crowd participation and entertainment. Having been both the founders and custodians of the Pro20 format locally, we are leaving knowing that it can only grow from strength to strength,” said Andisa Ntsubane, Head of Sports Sponsorships Standard Bank.

The Warriors are the defending champions, after beating the Lions by 87 runs in last year’s sold-out Pro20 final at St George’s in Port Elizabeth.

The competition gets underway on Friday, January 28, 2011, at Newlands, when the Cape Cobras host the Titans at 18:00. The match will be broadcast live on SuperSport 2.

Tickets for the Pro20 competition are priced between R20-R100 and can be purchased online at www.ticketpros.co.za, at all PostNet stores and all host venues.
