Cape Town - A dashing half-century from Herschelle Gibbs helped the Nashua Mobile Cape Cobras thrash the Nashua Titans by eight wickets in their Standard Bank Pro20 semi-final first leg at Sahara Park Newlands in Cape Town on Sunday.

Gibbs bashed his way to 52 off 42 balls as the Cobras reached 142 for two to eclipse the Titans’ score of 141 for six with 35 balls of their innings remaining.

The right-handed Gibbs plundered six fours and two sixes during his innings as he and Richard Levi (28) shared in a first-wicket stand of 72.

Gibbs perished in the 13th over, when he hoped out to long-on off the bowling of seamer Ethy Mbhalati but Owais Shah ended the match in a hurry with a rapid 30 not out off 21 balls.

The Titans did not aid their cause in the field as they offered up 24 extras to speed the Cobras on their way to a comprehensive victory.

The visitors, after winning the toss and electing to bat, failed to build on an opening stand of 45 between Jacques Rudolph (20) and Henry Davids (24).

Both men were dismissed, in the space of three balls, bowled by paceman Johann Louw.

The visitor’s innings meandered somewhat before Albie Morkel, who struck 25 runs off 18 balls, and Pierre Joubert (14 not out), provided some late action as the pair put on 30 runs off 19 balls for their unbroken seventh-wicket partnership.

Louw finished with figures of two for 33 while left-arm spinner Claude Henderson picked up two for 29.

Nineteen-year-old left-arm wrist-spinner Michael Rippon received the Mast Blaster bowling award for his economical figures of one for 17 off four overs.

The second leg between the two teams will be played at SuperSport Park in Centurion on Wednesday, March 9.
