Cape Town - The Nashua Mobile Cape Cobras will play the Chevrolet Warriors in the final of this season’s Standard Bank Pro20 competition.
This also means that the Eastern and Western Cape franchises will be Cricket South Africa’s (CSA) two representatives in the Champions’ League.
The Cobras got through to the final after beating the Nashua Titans in Wednesday’s second leg semi-final by 5 wickets with 2 balls to spare.
This is the second successive year that neither semi-final has gone to a third leg. The last time the Cobras reached the final they not only had to go to a third leg but to a super over as well.
The final will be played next Friday at Sahara Park Newlands with the Cobras gaining the home advantage having finished third on the log to the Warriors’ fourth position.
Wednesday’s semi-final second leg at SuperSport Park was one of the most spectacular matches in this format to date with no fewer than 25 sixes being struck (14 by the Titans and 11 by the Cobras).
The Cobras’ successful run chase of 224/5 was the highest of all time and only one run short of the highest total of all time.
Owais Shah (64 off 34 balls with 4 fours and 4 sixes) was named Standard Bank Master Blaster Batsman while the bowling award went to Albie Morkel for the remarkable figures in the circumstances of 2/31 in 4 overs. Morkel had a superb all-round match contributing 6 sixes and 6 fours on his way to an unbeaten 71 off 27 balls. It gave him a strike rate of 262.96.
David Wiese, also of the Titans, (30 not out off 10 balls with 2 fours and 3 sixes) had the top strike rate of 300.
Apart from Shah the main contributor to the Cobras’ success was Richard Levi (60 off 31 balls with 5 fours and 4 sixes). Levi has been the emerging star of the tournament with three half-centuries in 7 matches and a strike rate of close to 150.
