Bloemfontein – All-rounder Obus Pienaar of the Knights re-wrote the history books at Irish cricket club Waringstown when he broke a batting record of compatriot AB de Villiers.
Pienaar (21) last week posted the highest score to date in the Norhern Cricket Union when he struck 244 off just 114 deliveries against CIYMS. His innings included 22 sixes and 13 fours.
With that score he broke the record of 233 that De Villiers set for Carrickfergus against Cliftonville in 2004.
His club’s website reports that the Villagers had posted 392/6 in their 50 overs thanks to Pienaar’s impressive innings.
Pienaar had finished his South African season with a double century (212) for the Knights against the Titans. His Irish club side had already acquired his services before then and are now smiling broadly.
According to the website, the former South Africa under-19 player is destined for bigger things.
Warringstown were in trouble in the 13th over on 27/3 when Pienaar got to the crease. Pienaar and Lee Nelson (84, 112b) posted 303 for the fourth wicket.
The Lawn is believed to be one of the bigger cricket fields, but Pienaar apparently made it look small.
He only needed 31 deliveries for his first 50 runs. He survived with his score on 71 when Liam Jenkinson dropped him on the boundary.
Warringstown had 105/3 after 25 overs, after which Pienaar entertained the holiday crowd.
He only needed 59 balls for his century. His next 50 runs were scored off 19 deliveries and his double century off only 96 deliveries.
In one over he struck four sixes off spinner Stephen McChesney.
CIYMS were dismissed for just 146 runs.
Pienaar also scored 81 runs in the weekend’s victory by 117 runs over Instonians.
