Peterson tops at IPL auction

Cape Town - Proteas spinner Robin Peterson fetched the highest bid of the 29-man South African contingent that were listed in the Indian Premier League’s (IPL) auction in Bangalore.

According to The New Age website, Peterson was snapped up by the Kolkata Knight Riders for $100 000 in what turned out to be a very disappointing night for SA cricketers.

Kolkata also forked out $50 000 for youngster Marchant de Lange while veteran batsman Herschelle Gibbs was added to the Mumbai Indians’ squad for the same sum.

Early indications were that Lonwabo Tsotsobe and Vernon Philander were hot property and would easily have fetched in excess of $100 000.

Instead they joined wicketkeeper Mark Boucher in a long list of men who will be disappointed that they failed to attract any interest from the lucrative league’s big spenders.

Peterson, De Lange and Gibbs will join Albie Morkel, Wayne Parnell, Colin Ingram, Graeme Smith and Jacques Kallis who were contracted to the IPL prior to this auction.

Teams have been allowed to increase their squads from 30 to 33 and the number of foreign players from 10 to 11. However, only a maximum of four foreigners can play in any game.

This year's IPL will be played from April 4 to May 27.
