Parnell ruled out SA 'A' squad

Johannesburg - Wayne Parnell's groin injury has not recovered as speedily as was originally hoped and he has consequently been withdrawn from the South Africa 'A' squad for the tour of Sri Lanka in August.

Ethy Mbhalati of the Titans, who missed the 'A' tour of Bangladesh through injury, has also not recovered in time.

Francois Plaatjies of the Cape Cobras has been called up as a replacement from the SA Emerging Squad tour of Australia that takes place at the same time while his Cobras’ team-mate, Rory Kleinveldt, who was originally only selected for the limited overs component of the Sri Lankan tour, will play in the four-day matches as well.

It now seems possible that Parnell will have to undergo surgery which will probably rule him out of the Warriors’ Champions’ League campaign as well. He will possibly return to competitive cricket only in time for the Proteas’ tour of Pakistan in late October.

Plaatjies, who bowls in a similar style to Sri Lankan fast bowler Lasith Malinga, has had a rapid rise to the top of the South African domestic game. Injuries only allowed him to play half of the Cobras’ four-day matches in the SuperSport Series but he nevertheless still took 19 wickets in only 5 matches.

His average of 22.10 and his strike rate of 35.57 were both outstanding while he had an economy rate of 3.75 runs per over.
He also finished high up the MTN40 averages with 16 wickets at an average of 23.25.

No! I think the smart thing to do is start again with a younger skipper ...

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
