Parnell out of Champs League

Henk Steenkamp

Johannesburg – Left-arm paceman Wayne Parnell will not be available for the Warriors cricket team in the Champions League.

The international Twenty20 tournament will be played in South Africa in September, but Parnell will be absent due to the groin injury he is currently struggling with.

“It’s a big setback for us,” Warriors coach Russell Domingo said at Cricket South Africa’s awards evening on Tuesday.

“He will only play in October again. Fortunately we have Basheer Walters back (from the Titans) and Sinethemba Mjekula is regaining his best form after a knee injury.

“Mjekula bowled well in the nets this week and is getting fit.”

Domingo says he and his team are looking forward to the tournament, even though they realise the competition will be tough.

Domingo was named coach of the year at the awards evening. It was a wonderful season for the Eastern Cape franchise, who won the Standard Bank Pro20 and MTN40 series.

Colin Ingram was one of the Warriors’ biggest stars and honoured as the player of the Pro20 series. He was also honoured as the Players’ Association’s most valuable player and local players’ player of the year.
