Mumbai - West India's Kieron Adrian Pollard became the first, and most expensive, purchase of the Indian Premier League player auction on Tuesday.

Pollard, 22, will join the Mumbai Indians team after attracting an undisclosed winning fee of $750 000, while the Kolkata Knight Riders won the won New Zealand paceman Shane Bond for $750 000.

West Indies Test all-rounder Kemar Roach, 21, was bought by the Deccan Chargers for $730 000, while left-handed South African all-rounder Wayne Parnell was picked up by the Delhi Daredevils for $610 000.

Eoin Morgan became the first England player to be bought on Tuesday. Irish-born Morgan, a left-handed batsman who has represented England in limited-overs internationals, was bought by Royal Challengers Bangalore for $220 000.

England's Graeme Swann, Australian Brad Haddin, Pakistan's Shahid Afridi and India's Mohammad Kaif were unsold in the first round of the auction.

Pollard and Bond's purchases were decided by the newly introduced tiebreaker rule.

Pollard attracted $750 000 bids from four franchises - Mumbai, the Chennai Super Kings, Royal Challengers Bangalore and Kolkata.

The four bidders were asked to make silent bids on paper within five minutes. IPL Commissioner Lalit Modi received the bids and announced the winner.

Kolkata went into a tiebreak with the Deccan Chargers for Bond.

The silent bid amount exceeding the base price is not disclosed.

The excess money - more than the franchisees limit of $750 000 spending - goes to the IPL and not the player.

Trinidad & Tobago-born Pollard drew attention as an all-rounder during last year's Champions League Twenty20 tournament .

Bond was associated with the rebel Indian Cricket League and returned to the IPL fold only recently.

Justin Kemp was sold for $100 000 to the Chennai Super Kings. The Punjab Kings paid $50 000 for South African left-arm bowler Yusuf Abdulla.

The other South Africans in the draw - Zander de Bruyn, Tyron Henderson, Lonwabo Tsotsobe, Rory Kleinveldt, Vernon Philander, Johan van der Wath, Vaughn van Jaarsveld and Morne van Vyk - failed to find buyers.
