Napier - Jacob Oram contributed with both bat and ball to lead New Zealand to a 146-run victory over Bangladesh in the first one-day international at McLean Park, Napier, on Friday.
The visitors made a promising start in their pursuit of 337, as the openers Tamim Iqbal and Imrul Kayes (33) added 71 for the first wicket.
Even though they lost Mohammad Ashraful shortly after Kayes's departure, courtesy of debutant Andy McKay, Iqbal looked in good nick as he brought up his 13th ODI fifty.
However, it all went pear-shaped with the score on 118/2, as first Raqibul Hasan was trapped in front by Daniel Vettori, and when Iqbal departed in the same over for 62, the contest was effectively over.
Very little resistance came from the remainder of the batting line-up, and Bangladesh lost their final eight wickets for 72 runs.
The ever-consistent Vettori picked up 3/33 off his 10 overs, and Martin Guptill mopped up the tail with 2/7.
Man of the match Oram followed his batting efforts with 2/33, and McKay produced a satisfactory return of 9-0-40-2 in his first match.
Earlier, Oram blitzed New Zealand to an imposing 336 for nine.
Opting to bat first, the early loss of Brendon McCullum and Martin Guptil provided a golden opportunity for debutant Peter Ingram to prove his worth.
This he did as together with Ross Taylor the pair lifted the score to 119 before Ingram became Shafiul Islam's first of four victims for a well-played 69 off 74 deliveries.
Taylor went soon after reaching his 12th ODI fifty, but this didn't slow down the hosts as Neil Broom and captain Vettori (32) put on 52 for the sixth wicket.
Vettori's departure opened the door for Oram to completely flatten the visitors' attack with an explosive 83 off only 40 deliveries, which included eight boundaries and five sixes.
In the background, Broom went about his business, reaching his maiden ODI half-century nearly unnoticed, and when he was run out by Islam for 71 with the score on 310, the damage was done.
Islam continued to take to scalps of Oram and Tim Southee, finishing with 4/68 - the best for the visitors.
The second of the three ODIs will take place in Dunedin on February 8
