Lions style helps Petersen thrive

Cape Town - Highveld Lions batsman Alviro Petersen believes that abandoning ‘boring and dull’ cricket for a more favourable attacking brand has been one of the key reasons for their success in the Momentum One-Day Cup this season.

The Johannesburg franchise are busy readying themselves for Wednesday’s qualifier against the Warriors at the Bidvest Wanderers Stadium.

Petersen has been the catalyst for the Lions’ success with his five centuries helping him average a booming 95.57 this season.

“Sometimes you just play good cricket and everything clicks,” he said. “It’s probably a lot to do with that. It’s just something I can’t really put my finger on.

“I can’t say it’s because there’s no pressure because there is pressure. In the past there’s also been pressure, so it’s difficult to say exactly.

“Perhaps that’s where we need a psychologist to explain. I'm just happy everything is going well and I'm just enjoying my cricket at the moment.”

Petersen will be hoping for another significant contribution to try and ensure the Lions do reach the final, where the Cape Cobras await the winners after topping the regular season standings.

They have won five out of their 10 matches this season to end second on the log, ahead of facing the third-placed Warriors.

What has impressed many fans has been the brand played by the Lions, who have flourished despite regularly losing senior players due to injury and national call-ups.

“To be quite frank and honest, in the past the Lions played a brand of cricket that was boring, dull and cricket that didn’t really suit what one-day cricket is all about,” Petersen added.

“This season, for some reason the guys have just bought into the concept, which I wanted to be there four or five years ago. Perhaps that’s why it’s going so well for me and the team.”

The competition final is scheduled for PPC Newlands in Cape Town on Sunday.
