Titans win by bonus point

Johannesburg - A remarkable run chase by the Titans saw them record a bonus-point win over the Warriors at Buffalo Park and clinch a place in the Momentum One-Day Cup play-off at the expense of their hosts.

After bowling the Warriors out for 249 in 49.2 overs, the Titans knew that they needed to achieve their target inside 40 overs to guarantee their progression and duly romped to a seven-wicket victory in just 38.5 overs.

With the Dolphins beating the Cape Cobras in Durban, the Warriors sank from second place to fourth and crashed out of the competition - a cruel blow for a side who had spent the entire tournament near the top of the table despite losing three games to rain.

However the Titans have every right to feel that they deserve their crack at the Dolphins in the play-off - a match that will take place at Sahara Kingsmead on Tuesday - given how comprehensively they beat the Warriors on Friday.

The home side won the toss and chose to bat but saw their top-order woes continue. Michael Price came in as an opener in a bid to address the problem, but both he and Jon-Jon Smuts were back in the hut with just six runs on the board.

Colin Ingram and Ryan Bailey both got starts and then got out, and it required a solid innings of 74 from 69 balls from Ashwell Prince and a half-century from captain Davy Jacobs to haul the Warriors towards a decent total as Roelof van der Merwe claimed figures of 3 for 32.

Although a score of 249 was below par the Warriors have defended worse this season and the Titans were without captain Henry Davids and all-rounder David Wiese.

Yet the visitors made light work of it thanks to a superb 104 by Heino Kuhn and 73 from his opening partner Francois le Clus.

The pair put on 153 for the first wicket before a run-out parted them after 23.2 overs, and their good work was continued by Cobus Pienaar, who made 43 not out.

Rusty Theron accounted for both Kuhn and Farhaan Behardien as he took 2 for 43 in nine overs, but it was not enough as the Warriors were left praying for a Cobras win in Durban. When that did not materialise, their Momentum One-Day Cup campaign was unexpectedly ended.
