Andre Nel attempts suicide

2010-10-03 17:29

Pretoria – Former Proteas cricketer André Nel apparently tried to commit suicide after three more women, one of them a prostitute, told of having slept with him.

Nel's pregnant wife, Deanne Weitz, confirmed on Friday night that doctors had been called to the couple's swanky home in Irene outside of Pretoria after Nel tried to take his own life.

She was expecting their first child in April.

"He is not in any immediate danger and there are many doctors looking after him," she said.

It was unclear what had happened exactly.

Weitz had earlier in the day moved in with her parents in Benoni after it came to light that Nel had visited a Pretoria prostitute four times since November 2007.

It was revealed earlier that Nel had had an extra-marital affair with Jelena Kultiasova while he was playing cricket in England last month.

Meanwhile two other women have come forward with similar allegations about Nel.

Woesie. Face the consequences of your actions.

  • Well well well Tiger Haters - 2010-10-03 18:32

What say you now? Our beloved Boerseun also has some moral flaws. That's why I said not to judge others. Leave that to the Higher Powers.

  • Kobus - 2010-10-03 18:49

Shame, most affairs just keep going on in the dark. A poor sport celebrity gets splashed all over the media.

  • Comrade - 2010-10-03 18:56

He deos not learn so now he must face it.

  • Av - 2010-10-03 19:45

Another sporting celeb with feet of clay! Do we really care, Noooo. We are sorry for his wife, take a tip from Amore and Elin hit the road girl

  • CHRISTIAAN - 2010-10-03 20:01

SA must be the absolute most opinionated country in the world. Maybe it is time of all you judgemental a******s to stop for a moment and look around you - very carefully. You might be very very surprised. I am almost prepared to bet money on the fact that at least 2 out of every 5 couples you know had or currently have an affair issue. It's not a new trend, it has always been like this - just more open and easy now. Sport stars are even more tempted as woman throw themselves at them all day, every day - mostly gorgeous one too. I suppose if our Afrikaner churches allow gays and their ministers (predikante) meet other men in the bush for you know what, then you end up with a society where everything is just that much easier to "test". In the older days we always referred to the English as bein liberal, but now our Afrikaner boytjies and girls are just as leberated. Society determines one's behaviour and our cociety has become very sick. Do a quick test for yourself. How many friends/family members/colleagues do you know that have been divorced, had an affair or currently in the middle of some affair. Yes, it is not that rare anymore is it?

  • Anthony - 2010-10-03 20:02

Must we now feel sorry for you, You just want Deanne to forgive you, this is why you tried to do what you did. Be a man and take the punches delt to you

  • Guy - 2010-10-03 20:55

Don't be so harsh on either of them, each party in the relationship needs support, don't be so self righteous.

  • Alan - 2010-10-03 21:07

Sometimes I especially glad not to be a "celeb". I'd be in more trouble than Tiger, Andre, Rooney, and all the others put together - that's why I don't criticise them.

  • Happybloke - 2010-10-03 23:52

It as they say you make choices then you have to live with it as well. Sorry for his wife, maybe it is time for him to grow up and except that he has faulter and work it out, to have suicidal ideas is so anti Nel. Lets hope he can sort it out with his wife, how do you work this out a wife prgnanat, a wonderful house a celeb in a way and money, just he will know.

  • Cheese - 2010-10-04 06:09

Was Gunter involved in any of this ?

  • Mike - 2010-10-04 06:29

No sympathy - only for his wife. He is a big boy and must take whatever consequences for his immoral behaviour.

  • Stollie - 2010-10-04 06:37

By no means should anyone condone Nel's behaviour, should it prove to be true. But who are we to judge? These people live their lives in the media spotlight, and don't give me that rubbish that he chose to be a celebrity. He chose to be a cricketer, the media attention is an unfortunate byproduct. he has done nothing more than a large percentage of men (and women) across the world, and he shouldn't have to face the whole country in addition to his devastated wife. He does not answer to us he answers to her. So cut the guy some slack, let him face what he deserves privately. Put yourself in his shoes and imagine all your indiscretions being aired publicly. Shame on you who judge him.

  • gasguy - 2010-10-04 06:48

And I had sex with him too and so did my Doberman. Why doesn't everyone just start this nonsense and report that you had sex with someone famous and see if you can ruin there lives. Is there any proof. Who beleives a prostute had sex with him 4 x in 3 years. She cant remeber who she f...ed last night!!!!! Oh yes and I had an affair with Angelina Jolie when she was visiting Namibia. WTF has it got to do with anyone!

  • Sport's Fan - 2010-10-04 06:59

Maybe we should stop revelling in the celeb's pain and just let them be normal people. We are the reason that they feel so much pressure. I agree that whet he did was wrong, but why the need to destroy him in public - this is a private matter between Andre and his wife. All the best with your recovery!

  • Dave - 2010-10-04 07:23

If you want to mess around then don't get married and have kids. No one said he had to get married. Brought it upon himself and I have no sympathy at all...

  • Shawn - 2010-10-04 07:59

I have not walked a mile in this mans shoes, and I dont want to judge, if he was the unknown guy next door, would anyone care? what he has done is wrong, no doubt, but its just because he is a celeb that we are here talking about it.

  • John the Baptiste - 2010-10-04 08:12

Can you believe this guy gets sympathy for being unable to face the consequences of his actions. He must be stripped of any Springbok opportunities and his cricket career must be put to an end. We can't have weak characters playing cricket. If he really wanted to commit suicide he would have done it. Not left enough opportunity to be saved ....just wants sympathy from the wife. But if i were her i would make sure he lives at least 1 more year so he can lose everything. He's just scared cos the persona that he built up has been destroyed. Give him a bit of time and he'll get used to the loser title and want commit suicide anymore.....he want be able to afford the rope. bwahahahahahahhaah

  • Benny - 2010-10-04 08:13

@ come on boykie - A very sensible comment - I completely agree. What an opportunity this holds for Nel (and his wife, difficult as it is going to be for her to trust him again)

  • Fernando Boto - 2010-10-04 08:13

Who are we to judge??????? A speedy fighting recovery, like the ones you got us accustomed to on the cricket fields. Whatever you and Deanne decide to do with your lives, is nobody's business. Good luck to you both.

  • Roger - 2010-10-04 08:16

people like Nel always pretanding to be disgusted by poligamy while behind their wives they sleep around like rabbits. the man should marry 2, 3 , 4 wives.

  • Michael Bowery - 2010-10-04 08:18

Andre is an emorionally immature man which is the reason why at times his behaviour on the cricket field becomes objectionable. Remembering the adage `that there, but for the grace of God go I.' The real villain of the piece is of course the media and the pariah herd of journalists who have to make a living on anything which they or part of the public find juicy out of personal scandal. Maybe we need a Media Tribunal, not for the Party politicking, but the persistent invasion of personal privacy best sorted out by families themselves.. Either way Andre, face up to it like a man and sort it out, and good luck.

  • I'm Chocochino...So what - 2010-10-04 08:32

99.9999% of Men what. .....,The Almighty loves him ,this is not the end of the world,God has given him a second chance to overcome the devil, heneeds our support, let's not Judge him for we are not God.The mess has been done,so funny comments will not change the fact that he tried to take his life. He needs us,our prayers and support. Not critisism

  • mary - 2010-10-04 08:42

Why did his wife comment on this story? They are both as bad as each other

  • Siestog - 2010-10-04 08:46

So now he manipulates his wife into feeling sorry for him by trying to commit suicide? Coward.

  • John - 2010-10-04 08:54

i dont wanna be a billionaaaiire ... no friggin more!!

  • Fair @ Sport's Fan - 2010-10-04 08:54

All cheats should be named and shamed like the celebs. that would be more fair than allowing them to be "normal" people dealing with their issues than vica versa.

  • Fair @ Sport's Fan - 2010-10-04 08:54

  • Gruella - 2010-10-04 08:57

What has happened to our Christian morals and values??... Don't people ever read their Bibles? Stop gossiping and causing pain for other people! If he had done something wrong, it's his conscience and he has to face the Heavenly Father. Let the person who has a mighty white life, then be allowed to cast the first stone? Those who love to hurt other people, how many sceletons do you have in the closet? I am sick of people thriving in the hurt of others! Do you love Jesus, if so, you won't go round hurting other people!!!!

  • Hein - Centurion - 2010-10-04 08:58

Let him who is without SIN pick up the first stone.............

  • Elizabeth - 2010-10-04 09:13

Gruella: you don't have to read the bible or be a christian to have morals and values. Andre Nel you idiot boy.

  • John - 2010-10-04 09:30

She was expecting? She's not pregnant anymore?

  • MW - 2010-10-04 09:31

What Andre did is so cruel to his wife! However, aren't what happens in the office and client information confidential? Hookers get paid for their service, so they are not allowed to give Client Info out to anyone - also not the MEDIA! Andre sue the Hooker, it was breach of confidentiality! Then use the money to get treatment for your adiction to sex and see to it that you make it up to your wife and unborn child (for the rest of your life)!

  • JP - 2010-10-04 09:40

Dont judge other people especially if you are not perfect yourself! Everybody makes mistakes, as for the woman that called in on Five FM last week, I hope you feel good about yourself after telling the whole country about your affair with Andre and just remember that you knew he was married but you still went ahead and had the affair. You disgust me and I hope that you feel guilty after the attempted suicide.

  • WL - 2010-10-04 09:44

It is true that the person who commited sin should repent and stop sinning. It is also true that we should not judge a person. But we are allowed to call a bad deed a sin! If we are all to keep quiet about a person's bad behaviour (because if we do, "we judge"), what will the world become to? Then we should keep quiet about ALL bad deeds being commited! Murder, rape, theft, you name it. We must not talk about the axe murdere's deeds, because he is only human! Careful not to call him names because your sin might be worse! Excellent the way society is going! When are people going to accept resposibility for their deeds again?

  • Ben - 2010-10-04 09:45

I'm confused as to why this has to be public news whatsoever. As a celebrity, the poor sod constantly has to deal with his private life become public "People Magazine" hogwash! This is utter sad stuff.

  • Brad Sharpe - 2010-10-04 09:49

What a mug. A failed suicide just makes it that much more embarrassing.

  • Tiaan - 2010-10-04 09:49

What do Andre, Joost, Tiger, Steve Hofmeyer and Shane Warne have in common? They all CAN!!! Leave the dude alone. His personal life is no business of yours. If you want insigth in his personal life, then show him the size of your dick and your wife's lovely breasts. I suppose now suddnly you are private? What a country of sick people, living of the tragedies of others.

  • player - 2010-10-04 09:50

Andre' Nel has always been a controversial character. Drunk driving in Australia, smoking zol in the West Indies, and hitting Donald on the head when he was a laaitie (and the bursting into tears afterwards). I have played against Nel and he is the type of guy that is just an idiot (when playing against him, or with him). It also shows a lack of moral fibre to do what he's done (and there are plenty more that are keeping quiet I can assure you). But then to "attempt suicide" means that you are unable to take consequences of your actions as well.

  • Birgit Bosch - 2010-10-04 09:53

Wishing you a speedy recovery Andre. Hoping that this will only make you stronger! Make it right and live with no regrets.

  • Johann - 2010-10-04 09:55

You either commit suicide or you don't. He was just trying to attract attention. He was caught and that is the bottom line. If these girls didn't come out with the whole story, he would still be cheating on his wife. It is a matter of self restraint / or the lack thereof. SA sports people are not above everybody else. There will not even be a nice place in hell for you either.

  • dan - 2010-10-04 09:57

You know what, Andre is a fantastic cricketer and a great man. What ever happened in their marriage, has got ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with anyone. Judging people without knowing him, and talking behind his back is two faced, and a sin. I have never met Andre, but as a man, and a cricketer, he seems like a great guy. Get well Andre, pick yourself up and move forward.!!

  • boundaries - 2010-10-04 10:01

He is very very selffish to try to commit suicide and leave everybody behind with the problems - Be a man and face the problems you caused and sort it out - It's not to late

  • Dr Freud - 2010-10-04 10:07

Got caught out and now looking for sympathy? This reaction from our Nella is hardly surprising considering his immaturity on the cricket pitch. The great fast bowlers get annoyed when a batsman plays and misses at good deliveries or nicks one over the keeper for a boundary. Nel bowls like his backside, gets punished for it and then gets all huffy and puffy at the batsman, totally oblivious that he's about as intimidating as a kitten with a pink ribbon tied around its tail. Word groot ou grote!

  • Brent - 2010-10-04 10:11

Everyone here is so preoccupied with whether he is beiong judged etc. The point is he has been unfaithfull to his wife and there is very little that might justify that type of behaviour. Yes, we all have flaws but when he got married I expect he made promises before God to his wife. What's become of their marriage covenant? How should his wife be feeling? Would those of you trying to defend his behaviour feel the same if your husband/wife cheated on you?

  • @gruella - 2010-10-04 10:32

In the Bible the wise men (e.g. Solomon) had many wives. Case closed.

  • henk - 2010-10-04 10:47

Can,t believe the support this bad boy is getting. Seems like our jiggolow is a national hero all of a sudden. Guys all across the country now wish they were in his shoes, getting jiggy with it, whenever. where ever. who ever. Please dont spin me the crap about their privacy., Celebs always want our attention till they do something wrong and then they cry about all the unwanted attention.? (sport) Celebs choose to live the life, it's got it's pro's and con,s. Ever heard of the afrikaans saying; Die hoogste bome vang die meeste wind?

  • beejay - 2010-10-04 11:04

people in the public eye have a special responsibility, as children look up to them as heroes. They must unfortunately conduct themselves and their lives morally and set the kids a good example. NO EXCUSES!!
