SA move closer to whitewash

Port Elizabeth - New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum fell to left-arm spinner Robin Peterson for the third time in as many innings after his team were made to follow on by South Africa on the third day of the second and final Test at St George's Park on Sunday.

Peterson struck again when he bowled Kane Williamson shortly before tea. New Zealand were 64 for two at the interval, still needing 340 runs to avoid an innings defeat.

Dale Steyn earlier took five for 17 as New Zealand were bowled out for 121 in their first innings, a deficit of 404.

Live scorecard

McCullum and Martin Guptill made a cautious start as New Zealand set out to try to avoid their second successive innings defeat. They saw off the new ball attack of Steyn and Morne Morkel as they put on 40 for the first wicket.

After being dismissed by Peterson in the second innings in the first Test at Cape Town and in the first innings in the current match, McCullum played Peterson with exaggerated caution before missing a delivery which went straight on and trapped him leg before wicket for 11.

Steyn had a spell of three wickets for three runs in five overs on Sunday morning to reduce New Zealand to 62 for nine in reply to South Africa's 525 for eight declared.

But BJ Watling made a defiant 63 and added 59 for the last wicket with Trent Boult (17 not out) before Watling was last man out, caught at first slip off Morne Morkel. It was a record tenth wicket stand for New Zealand against South Africa.

Watling, the New Zealand wicketkeeper, followed up a marathon 42 during New Zealand's innings defeat in the first Test with another composed, impressive performance. He faced 87 balls and hit 13 boundaries.

Watling and Doug Bracewell survived the first half hour on Sunday after New Zealand resumed at 47 for six. But Steyn's probing line just outside off stump finally induced Bracewell to edge the ball to wicketkeeper AB de Villiers.

Neil Wagner and Jeetan Patel both fell to Steyn without scoring. Steyn was rested, presumably with an eye to bowling in the second innings, and Watling and Boult went for their shots against Rory Kleinveldt and Robin Peterson.

South African captain Graeme Smith was forced to bring back Morkel and the tall fast bowler dismissed Watling with his fourth ball.

Brief scores:

South Africa 525-8 declared (Graeme Smith 54, Hashim Amla 110, AB de Villiers 51, Faf du Plessis 137, Dean Elgar 103 not out); New Zealand 121 all out (BJ Watling 63; Dale Steyn 5-17) and 64-2 (M. Guptill 40 not out)

No! I think the smart thing to do is start again with a younger skipper ...

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
