Proteas: Morkel in for Steyn

Cape Town - Fast bowler Morné Morkel will replace Dale Steyn for the Proteas' second one-day international (ODI) against New Zealand in Kimberley on Tuesday.

According to the Beeld website, Steyn - who played in Saturday's one-wicket defeat in Paarl - will rejoin the squad for Friday's third and final match in the series.

This is part of coach Gary Kirsten's rotation policy to give his best players some rest with a tough series against Pakistan looming and a long year ahead. Therefore, should South Africa lose Tuesday's game at the De Beers Diamond Oval, Steyn won't even be considered for the third match as the series will already have been lost. Steyn conceded only 33 runs in his 10 overs in Paarl, but was unable to take a wicket.

The Proteas will also have a new skipper, with Faf du Plessis taking over from the suspended AB Villiers. De Villiers was on Sunday suspended for two matches due to his team's slow over-rate against the Kiwis.

Du Plessis admitted the absence of AB de Villiers leaves a gaping hole in the middle order, but stressed it is a good opportunity for the reserve batsmen, Farhaan Behardien and David Miller, to test their skills and impress if they are selected to play.

“You cannot replace AB (de Villiers), he is one of the world’s best batsmen, he will leave a huge gap,” Du Plessis said via a statement released to the media on Monday. “It is however an opportunity for someone else to step in, and for us to look at our options going forward especially with the ICC Champions Trophy ahead.”

Plays in starts at 14:30 on Tuesday.
