NZ snatch dramatic win

Dunedin - New Zealand beat Pakistan by 32 runs on the final afternoon of the first Test on Saturday.

Pakistan were 165 for five at tea, needing another 86 runs for victory, but after the break they lost their final five wickets for only 23 runs, handing the Black Caps their first Test victory in more than a year.

After the break, it started to look like an easy home stretch for Pakistan before Shane Bond and Iain O'Brien dried up the runs. The former then brought one in to Umar Akmal and latched onto his second caught-and-bowled of the match.

The younger Akmal top-scored with 75, adding a Test half-century to his first innings maiden ton.

O'Brien followed up Umar's wicket with those of brother Kamran and Umar Gul.

Bond and O'Brien took three wickets apiece, with clever assistance from Daniel Vettori (2/51) and Chris Martin who also claimed two.

Earlier, the hosts were dismissed for 153 after being 147 for eight, setting Pakistan 251 runs for victory.

Mohammad Asif took 4/43 and Gul 3/41.

The second Test in Wellington starts on December 3.

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
