London - New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum won the toss and elected to field beneath cloudy skies in the first one-day international against England at Lord's on Friday.
England were without fast bowlers Stuart Broad and Steven Finn, who have been ruled out of the first two one-day internationals due to injury.
Broad bruised his right knee on the final day of the second Test at Headingley earlier this week, while Finn is sidelined with a sore shin.
Both players will be re-assessed prior to the third and final one-day international at Trent Bridge on Wednesday.
Jade Dernbach was included in the starting line-up, having been drafted into the squad to provide cover for Tim Bresnan, whose wife is due to give birth.
New Zealand spinner Daniel Vettori was unable to play, despite hopes he would be ready to return after a lengthy lay-off with an Achilles injury.
Off-spinner Nathan McCullum started in Vettori's place, while wicketkeeper/batsman Luke Ronchi made his New Zealand debut after previously representing Australia.
The tourists are bidding to bounce back from a 2-0 defeat in the Test series, which concluded on Tuesday when England completed a crushing 247-run victory at Headingley.
The second one-day international takes place in Southampton on Sunday.
