Titans tame the Lions

Centurion - The Nashua Titans defeated the Bizhub Highveld Lions by 91 runs in their MTN40 match at Supersport Park.

A devastating spell by Ethy Mbhalati ripped the Lions’ heart out of their batting order, while Pierre Joubert stopped the middle order revival and Basheer Walters cleaned up the tail as all three ended up with three wickets apiece on a very satisfactory night for the home side.

Wicketkeeper Heino Kuhn also had cause to celebrate, equalling Kenny Jackson’s 1995/6 record for the most catches in an innings with five scalps for his efforts.

The Lions will now need a good win on Sunday against the Warriors, and hope for the Dolphins to lose to the Titans to sneak into the playoffs via the back door.

Chasing 249 to win on a pitch that looked good, the Lions were in trouble early as Ethy Mbhalati produced an excellent spell of bowling to put them on the ropes.

Mbhalati removed Jonathan Vandiar, Alviro Peterson and Dane Vilas in an opening spell that left him excellent figures of 3/9 and with Basheer Walters trapping Neil McKenzie leg before, the Lions were reeling on 24/4 early on.

When Pierre Joubert enticed Zander de Bruyn to nick a ball for Heino Kuhn to take the catch, it seemed that the Lions might set a new record in scoring their lowest total – that record being 127 against the Titans at the Wanderers earlier this season.

But a solid 82 run partnership between Vaughn van Jaarsveld (56, 62 balls, 3x4, 3x6) and Thami Tsolekele (24, 52 balls, 1x4) brought some respectability to the carnage and gave the Lions a glimmer of hope.

Joubert’s second spell of bowling ended that hope though, as he removed Van Jaarsveld and Cliffie Deacon with outside edges, and Albie Morkel sent Tsolekile packing in similar fashion.

Walters returned to grab the final two wickets to claim a good victory.

Earlier half centuries by Jacques Rudolph and Kuhn, ably assisted by quickfire forties by Faf du Plessis and Gulam Bodi set up the imposing total for the Lions to chase.

Rudolph scored 54 off just 40 balls, including seven boundaries and two massive sixes and looked set for a big score when he tried his arm once too often to be caught in the outfield.

Bodi followed shortly afterwards after a moment of madness when he attemped a suicidal run to the arm of Zander de Bruyn to be clearly run out for 46.

The Lions bowling attack looked tame for most of the late afternoon, as Faf du Plessis and Heino Kuhn took over where Rudolph and Bodi left off and put on 73 in just 10 overs before Du Plessis double stepped a ball from Werner Coetzee, missed and was bowled.

Du Plessis ended on 49 off just 48 balls and was followed three overs later by Kuhn, who managed his 51 off just 39 balls before De Bruyn trapped him leg before.
