Titans beat the Knights
Pretoria - The Nashua Titans have beaten the Chevrolet Knights by 54 runs at Sahara Willowmoore Park, the game being a reflection of the tremendous depth in South African domestic cricket at the moment.
It was an important Pool A win for the Titans as they claimed the bonus point as well.
Faf du Plessis won the MTN man of the match award for his 81 off 80 balls (8 fours) and there were other good performances from Roelof van der Merwe (26 off 23 balls and 1/34 in 8 overs), Dean Elgar (63 off 65 balls and 2/27 in 6 overs), Rilee Rossouw (60 off 67 balls) and Ethy Mbhalati (1/26 in 8 overs). Mbhalati’s wicket was his 100th in List A competition.
Du Plessis has a batting average above 40 in this format, is a usable part-time leg-spinner and is one of the best fielders in the domestic game. A former SA under-19 cap he lost ground when he signed a Kolpak deal with Lancashire but is certainly now back in the mix as a contender for Protea honours.
The Titans won the game for their outstanding performance both with the ball and in the field. CJ de Villiers and Heino Kuhn produced direct hit run outs to dismiss Ryan Bailey and Ryan McLaren respectively while De Villiers also took an excellent catch to get rid of Elgar.
The Titans total of 228/8 was competitive without being brilliant on a testing surface but their bowling and fielding turned it into a winning margin. Andre Nel and Mbhalati had the Knights 10/3 in 5.2 overs and their batting was under pressure for the remainder of the innings even when Rossouw and Elgar were adding 79 off 87 balls for the fifth wicket.
