Kemp steers Cobras home

Benoni - Justin Kemp’s powerful hitting at the death propelled the Cape Cobras to their second consecutive win under pressure, as they hunted down their revised target of 281 against the Titans in their 1 Day Cup match at Willowmoore Park on Sunday.

With the required run rate beyond 10 an over in the last 10 overs, Kemp bludgeoned 41 off 26 balls, despite the wickets tumbling around him.

Bad weather had seen the Cobras’ initial target of 292 changed to 281 in 46 overs. Left-hander Andrew Puttick played a sheet-anchor role, as he compiled a steady 96, before falling in the late dash for runs.

Earlier, Farhaan Behardien struck a well-timed 55 not out to help the Titans post 291 for 7. Several of the Titans batsmen got in, and then got out when set, and without Behardien’s late stand with Paul Harris, they may well have had to settle for a below-par total.

Henry Davids had started proceedings with a half-century against his former team-mates, eventually being dismissed for 60 off 73 balls. Faf du Plessis (30) and skipper Martin van Jaarsveld (37) both fell to Duminy’s spin, after they had added 60 for the fourth wicket.

Harris (20) and Behardien then added 51 in the last ten overs, to set the Cobras another testing total, following on from Friday night’s thrilling win over the Warriors.

Puttick was one of Marchant de Lange’s five victims, but the young paceman also leaked 67 runs in the frenetic run-chase. His pace had seen him rip through Justin Ontong and Rory Kleinveldt, as well as having the well-set Duminy caught behind for 54 off 51 balls.

The Cobras looked in danger of imploding, as they lost four wickets for eight runs, but Kemp’s cool head and searing blade saw them over the line with an over to spare.

The win sees the men from Cape Town consolidate their place at the top of the 1-Day Cup standings.
