Paarl - The Nashua Dolphins came to Boland Park without one of the biggest match winners in South African limited overs cricket in Loots Bosman but they found another Protea of equivalent potential in Vaughn van Jaarsveld.
The left-hander who recently moved from the bizhub Highveld Lions to the KwaZulu-Natal franchise struck a sparkling 76 off 55 balls with 7 fours and 4 sixes to get the Dolphins home by 7 wickets with a very handy 69 balls to spare in their MTN40 Pool B match against the Cobras.
The result guaranteed them the other semi-final place from Pool B along with the Lions and the fact that they collected a bonus point as well means that there is an outside chance of their claiming top place.
The Cobras have now lost 5 matches on the trot and can only play for pride in their remaining two matches.
Their batting with the possible exception of Andrew Puttick has failed to perform up to expectation and the bowlers have too often had to defend the almost indefensible.
The absence of Charl Langeveldt from today’s match did not help either.
Even with Langeveldt they would have struggled to defend a total of 161.
Imran Tahir again played a key role conceding only 14 runs in his 8 overs and taking 2 wickets while newcomer Keshev Maharaj, fresh from the Hong Kong Super Sixes, took a highly respectable 1/22 in his 8 overs.
