Boucher boost for Cobras

Cape Town - Mark Boucher is in line to play his first match for the Cape Cobras in their 1 Day Cup opener against the Dolphins in Durban on Friday.

Boucher has rejoined the Cape Town-based franchise after leaving at the end of the 2007/08 season after not playing a single match from the Warriors.

Cobras coach Richard Pybus will be excited by the prospect of strengthening his squad with the arrival of two additional Proteas from their Eastern Cape rivals, with Jacques Kallis also returning to his home franchise in the opening match of a tournament the Cobras have notoriously not done well in.

One player who may miss out is young wicketkeeper, Dane Vilas.

Vilas comes off the back of a remarkable innings of 161 not out in his last innings, helping the Cobras to comprehensively beat the Titans by an innings and 46 runs winning margin and it would be a tough decision to leave 26-year-old out of the team.

Pybus revealed that he has made his mind up over who will keep wicket in Friday’s match, but has not decided if there is place for any of his two other wicket keepers as batsmen in his team.

“We haven’t decided yet on the side, but Mark will keep wicket for us,” Pybus told the Cape Times newspaper.

“Dane’s innings was very important for him personally, and it was a significant innings in terms of that it was a pretty challenging wicket. And it was good for him, considering Ryan Canning is also performing well in the Western Province Amateur team and competition for places is always healthy.”

Pybus went onto say that it was a win-win situation for both the Cobras and the Proteas, not only in adding strength to the squad and keeping the national players sharp, but also for the future health of Proteas cricket.

“It was pleasing to see Mark having a one-on-one session with Dane, giving him a few pointers and working with one of South Africa’s young up and coming wicket-keepers.”

Boucher was under fire for his recent performances in the Proteas shirt, particularly in the second ODI against Australia in Port Elizabeth.

“Yeah, I wasn’t happy with my performance in PE. I have worked with Ray before and he pointed out a few things.”

Boucher, Wisden’s Cricketer of the Year in 2009, will be hoping to add value to the 1 Day Cup and is no stranger to Pybus as well as latter coached Boucher while the two were together at Border in the 1990s.

“I’ve worked with Richard for a long time and we get along very well. I am really looking forward to doing well her at the Cobras. Richard has been one of the few guys I have turned to throughout my career and he’s been a great influence on me.”
