Langeveldt gets ODI call-up

2010-02-07 13:24

Nagpur - Paceman Charl Langeveldt was on Sunday added to South Africa's squad for the upcoming three-match one-day international series against India.

"We have decided to add Langeveldt as an additional player to the squad announced earlier," South Africa's selection convener Gerald Majola said in a statement.

South Africa are currently playing a two-Test series in India, the first of which started in Nagpur Saturday.

"We do not believe that we have all our bases covered at the moment in the bowling department," Majola said, referring to the one-day squad.

"We have two major ICC tournaments coming up, first the World Twenty20 in the West Indies and then next year's World Cup on the sub-continent and it is important that we explore all our options.

"Langeveldt also brings much needed experience to our attack. He has played 64 matches while Dale Steyn, Morne Morkel and Wayne Parnell have played only 67 matches between them."

The one-day internationals will be played in Jaipur (Feb 21), Gwalior (Feb 24) and Ahmedabad (Feb 27) after the conclusion of the ongoing two-Test series.

South Africa ODI squad:

Graeme Smith (captain), Loots Bosman, Johan Botha, Mark Boucher, AB de Villiers Jean-Paul Duminy, Herschelle Gibbs, Jacques Kallis, Charl Langeveldt, Albie Morkel, Morne Morkel, Wayne Parnell, Alviro Petersen, Dale Steyn, Lonwabo Tsotsobe, Roelof van der Merwe.

It is disgusting that Amla has been left out of the squad. Surely the "new" selectors should have rectified this.

I must agree with Miked... Hash has a good ODI record and should have been included in the touring party as a back-up opener. Bosman is lucky to make the squad (based on his domestic season)

when not use some youth? what about CJ de Villiers or Rusty theron? i know langeveldt is a cape coloured and has been in good form so he fits the bill their with Majola(govt) but come on! he is almost 36 and hasn't done much for sa in a while now! i've said it before, it is ridiculous how much depth australia have in their bowling and sa are pretty thin on the ground in comparison!........shaun tait was bowling 100 mph consistently the other day!

Great stuff! Good for Charl! @TheLastRodesian - please get of your blinking racial high-horse - and you obviously don't know much of the history of SA Cricket... or Charl Langeveldt's cricket history... ag there goes the same song again... Aus is so good... tra la la...

  • Morne - 2010-02-07 21:58

"Selectors" - are you only calling up Charl now??? CSA is dumber than previously thought. You don't fail to disappoint...

  • JOHAN - 2010-02-08 00:38

I like the inclusion of Charl into the one day squad well done the selectors The selectors should considder the Titans opener BD Snijman Instead of Loots Bosman

  • Centurion - 2010-02-08 08:55

Yes George - he has a fantastic ODI record - ave around 47 with a strike rate in the 80's.

Glad to see Charl in the team. He's been out of the team for reasons other than form. People have such short memories. As for Amla, he would be an asset to any side, but he seems more suited to the longer game, as we saw last year. I reckon leave the selections to the selectors. They have their finger on the button much more than couch potatoes, whose opinion (mine included) is from only one perspective.

CAN'T BELIEVE SOME OF YOU ARE THROWING NAMES OF SNIJMAN, CJ, ETC FOR THE ODI TEAM. AMLA, DESERVES TO BE IN THE STARTING 11, HES RECORDS AND STAT SPEAK FOR THEMSELVES, BETTER THAN GIBBS, BOSMAN, PETERSEN, DUMINY AND THE ABOVE NAMES MENTIONED. HE IS A TRUE SAFRICAN HERO, AND NO ONE CAN DOUBT IRO OF WHICH RACE/RELIGION YOU FROM.
