Kempton Park impress

Cape Town - The Horseshoe Kempton Park Cricket Club (CC) rose four places to the top of the Cricket South Africa (CSA) National Club Championship Section 1 log after they thrashed United Cricket Club by an almighty 131 runs on Day Two of the tournament in Pretoria on Tuesday.

Johan Fourie, Marius Lubbe and Brett Luck scored 70, 55 and 53 respectively to help get Kempton Park to a competitive 275/8 in their 50 overs after being asked to bat by United. Although the bowlers took wickets, they were not getting rid of the batsmen regularly enough to restrict them to a lower score. In reply, United batsmen could not take the pressure off Kempton Park's tight bowling and were skittled out for 144 runs in 35.2 overs.

Assupol TUKS rose from third place on Monday to first on the Section 2 log with eight points after giving the Central University of Technology (CUT) their first taste of defeat in the competition. TUKS won the toss and chose to bowl first on a gloomy morning, and bowled CUT out for 115 runs in 27.5 overs. Gerhard Linde, Maurice Aronstam and CJ de Villiers took two wickets each. Although TUKS' only batsman to get double figures was Ernest Kemm, who returned an unbeaten 31 runs, the CUT bowlers were unable to restrict TUKS, who won the match on 117/6 in 44.3 overs.

In a much anticipated clash between the Mecer Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) Madibaz and the University of the Western Cape (UWC), it was UWC who won the day, defeating the defending champions by a close 19 runs to rise to fourth place from the bottom of the Section 2 log. UWC were put in to bat first after NMMU won the toss, they were restricted to 125/8 in their 50 overs. NMMU's reply was not good enough, if their bowling had been tight, UWC showed a ruthless determination to succeed and confined them to 106 all out with 10 overs to spare.

In the second highest scoring match of the day, North West PUKKE beat the TIB Crusaders CC by three wickets. The Crusaders posted 233/8 in 50 overs after PUKKE won the toss and put them in to bat first. Vaughn van Jaarsveld top scored with 53 runs while Jared van Heerden and Craig Sugden chipped in with 44 and 45* respectively. In reply, Rassie van Dussen led the batting with an unbeaten 79 runs to help get PUKKE to 234/7 in 49.1 overs for their first victory of the tournament so far.

Steel & Pipe/ DDCM West End CC recovered from yesterday's disappointing loss to record their first win of the competition. They beat Steinhoff Maties by 23 runs. West End scored 154 all out in 35.5 overs with Conrad Prinsloo top scoring with 51 runs. Prinsloo went on to lead the bowling attack, claiming four wickets for 46 runs in his 10 overs to restrict Maties to 131 all out in 37.5 overs.

In the final and lowest scoring match of the day, Union Stars Cricket Club beat Philips Glenvista CC by 37 runs. Impressive bowling from Keith Dudgeon (4/23 in 7 overs) and Alwyn Vorster (3/26 in 6 overs) saw Union Stars bowled out for 100 runs in 30.4 overs. The Glenvista batsmen did not show up on the day, Douglas Baartman took the only five wicket haul of the day, taking 5/23 in his 10 overs while Rhupino Plaaitjies chipped in with 3/22 in 10 overs to remove Glenvista for 63 runs in just 23.2 overs.
