Sydney - Australia were 286 for eight in their second innings at stumps on the third day of the second Test against Pakistan at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) on Tuesday, a slender lead of 80 runs.
Mike Hussey (73) and Peter Siddle (10) will continue in the morning.
Coming out after the tea break with their score on 199 for three, Australia were in a good position to erase the seven-run deficit and start building a strong lead.
But Pakistan had other plans and within 10 overs after the interval both Michael Clarke and Marcus North retraced their steps back to the changing room for the addition of only 27 runs.
Danish Kaneria followed that up with the scalp of Brad Haddin even though the latter opted to use the referral system, challenging the on-field lbw decision. Hawkeye showed the ball hitting the stumps and Haddin had to go.
Kaneria was not done, as he cleaned up the ever-aggressive Mitchell Johnson's stumps with the googly for three.
Five runs later, Umar Gul collected his third wicket, that of Nathan Haurtiz who felt for the shorter one outside off and the edge was snaffled in the slips.
Kaneria finished the day with 4/117 off 32.1 overs, and Gul had 3/62.
Earlier, Shane Watson and Phillip Hughes (37) added 105-runs for the first-wicket before the latter - who has played a very circumspect role until then, danced down the track to Kaneria and, driving the ball back to the bowler's left, Kaneria took a well-judged one-handed catch.
Ricky Ponting was the next to go for 11, edging Gul to Faisal Iqbal in the slip cordon.
Watson, on his way to his second Test century, was surprised by a rising delivery from Gul, and in trying to fend it off, he gloved the ball to Iqbal, three runs short of his ton.
Resuming on their overnight score of 331/9, Pakistan could only last five deliveries before being dismissed for 333 - a lead of 106.
Doug Bollinger got rid of the last man, Kaneria, to finish with 4/72.
