Nagpur - Hashim Amla and Jacques Kallis completed a record partnership, but Kallis again fell short of that elusive double century as South Africa strengthened its hold on the first test against India on day two Sunday.

At lunch, South Africa were 379-3, with Amla unbeaten on 170 and AB de Villiers not out 17.
Kallis (173) was the sole wicket to fall in the opening session, caught bat pad by Murali Vijay at short leg off the bowling of Harbhajan Singh.
Kallis seems destined to finish his career as one of the best batsmen in test history never to have scored a double century.
Still, he and Amla's 340-run partnership set a new record as the biggest third-wicket stand ever scored in India.
Kallis, whose 34th test century equalled Sunil Gavaskar for third place in the list of test century makers, stayed at the crease for 331 minutes and hit 15 fours and two sixes.
Amla, who batted patiently to bag his eighth century on the first day, made full use of the life he got Sunday and was poised to reach his highest ever test score, outdoing his existing record of 176.
When on 149, Amla was dropped by Vijay at forward short leg off Singh.
Singh was the best of the India bowlers in the opening session, but the hosts were already in a poor position in a match that will go some way to deciding the No.1 spot in official test rankings.
