Jonty dumps wife for girlfriend

Durban - Cricket legend Jonty Rhodes’s 15-year marriage with Kate is on the rocks. He will be moving to Cape Town to be with his new girlfriend.

Rhodes, who has been living in Durban with his wife, will still see his children, Daniella (9) and Ross (4), regularly. He is in Durban this week to spend time with his children.

He and the woman, whose identity he refused to reveal, have apparently moved into a house in Bloubergstrand together.

He added that while he and Kate are estranged there are, as yet, no plans to get divorced. “We are still taking it a week at a time,” he said.

His new girlfriend is “part of the reason” for his move. “My brother and I have business interests together,” he said. They supply road construction equipment and also do property development.

Rhodes is an Indian Premier League (IPL) coach and is also involved with Standard Bank. He plans to pursue these business interests in Cape Town.

Rhodes met Kate in his second year at university and they were married two years later. He was 24 at the time.

As recently as October last year he said in an interview that he and Kate are happy together.

He told Christian magazine Joy! that he travels a lot as part of his work as a coach for the IPL, while Kate stays at home and takes care of their children.

Asked how he felt about the estrangement he said, “I don’t want to talk about it. How do you think I feel about it?”
