Early morning drizzle in the east coast city early Sunday meant groundstaff left the Kingsmead pitch under covers until just over an hour ahead of the scheduled start of play.

Light rain began to fall again as umpires Steve Davis and Asad Rauf inspected the pitch at 10:00 a.m. local time (0800 GMT), the expected start time, and the covers were brought back on. The umpires said the toss would take place at 10:30.

South Africa leads top-ranked India 1-0 in the three-match series after its innings and 25-run win at Centurion.

The home team is likely to name an unchanged team, while India is expected to recall fit-again fast bowler Zaheer Khan.

Probable teams

South Africa - Graeme Smith (capt), Alviro Petersen, Hashim Amla, Jacques Kallis, AB de Villiers, Ashwell Prince, Mark Boucher (wk), Lonwabo Tsotsobe, Dale Steyn, Paul Harris, Morne Morkel.

India - Gautam Gambhir, Virender Sehwag, Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, Vangipurappu Laxman, Cheteshwar Pujara, Mahendra Singh Dhoni (capt, wk), Harbhajan Singh, Zaheer Khan, Ishant Sharma, Shanthakumaran Sreesanth.
