Durban - The missing Test cap that Proteas captain Graeme Smith has used from his first ever Test for his country has been returned after it was allegedly stolen whilst he was travelling from Cape Town to Durban.
Smith revealed this news via his Twitter account earlier in the day:
"Smith Tweet: Big thx everyone, got my cap back!must have been @janbraai lamb offering...;-)quality crowd on boxing day,big for the boys #PROTEAS"
An official Cricket South Africa Tweet confirmed the return of the cap:
"@GraemeSmith49's cap has been found and returned to its rightful owner. #Happydays"
Smith had been distraught after he initially discovered the cap's absence and Jan Scannel, better known as "JanBraai" on Twitter had offered up a whole lamb as a reward for the missing cap.
The caps hold much value to the players in that they are awarded by the national captain as part of a small and personal on field ceremony on the player’s debut.
Graeme Smith has described the cap as "irreplaceable".
The return of the cap will be seen as a good omen by the Proteas as they go into the second day of the second Test against India at Kingsmead in a commanding position.
