MS queries Albie ommission

Christo Buchner

Durban – South Africa must have many other good options if they leave a player like Albie Morkel out of the team.

This was the opinion on Tuesday afternoon of Mahendra Singh Dhoni, the Indian cricket captain, when he was asked about Morkel, with whom he plays in the Indian Premier League for the Chennai Super Kings.

Dhoni admitted that he was very surprised that South Africa no longer thought Morkel was good enough for one day cricket, "He is a very good player in the shorter version of the game and I have much respect for him."

Morkel is not in the Twenty20 group or in the group for one day series, and it looks unlikely that he will make the group for the World Cup tournament in February.

"I don't know why he was not chosen, but I regard him as a very special player and guys with his ability are rare. We would like to have a versatile player with his ability in our team," said Dhoni.

Paceman Praveen Kumar will not be part of the one day series due to an elbow injury which he sustained in Sunday's Twenty20 match.

He will be replaced by Ishant Sharma. He flew back to India after the Test series, but will now fly back to South Africa.

Dhoni said the strategy in the limited overs series, which begins on Wednesday, will be to bat as fast as possible and to reconsider the position every 10 to 15 innings.

"We have targets that we set and we will see how we are doing with those. You also have to show some respect for the bowlers with the new white ball."
