Amla 'embarrassed' to beat Viv

Cape Town - Hashim Amla says he felt a bit embarrassed surpassing West Indian great Viv Richards in becoming the fastest man to reach 4 000 ODI runs.

Amla scored 100 as South Africa thrashed India by 134 runs in Durban on Sunday to take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-game ODI series.

When Amla scored his 59th run, he became the fastest to 4000 ODI runs, beating Richards' record by seven innings.

Amla has now scored 4 481 runs in 81 ODI innings at an average of 53.88.

In an interview with the ESPNcricinfo website, Amla said he felt a bit embarrassed to beat Richards because "he is certainly the master blaster, the original great batsman".

Amla said he's had the privilege of meeting Richards on a few occasions and feels the West Indian is more deserving than anyone else to have the record.

Richards scored 6 721 runs in 167 ODI innings at an average of 47.

Amla said with the amount of one-day cricket played nowadays, he is certain his record will soon be broken.

The Proteas tackle India in the third and final ODI in Centurion on Wednesday.
