Dhaka - Gautam Gambhir and Virender Sehwag completed half-centuries as India reached 177-2 in their first innings at lunch in reply to Bangladesh's 233 on the second day of the second Test here on Monday.
Left-handed opener Gambhir, aiming to equal Australian Don Bradman's world record of scoring a century in six successive Tests, was caught behind for 68 while fending off a rising delivery from paceman Shafiul Islam.
Gambhir, who was on 26 in his team's overnight total of 69 for no loss, hit nine fours in his solid 83-ball knock for his 11th half-century in 29 Tests.
Rahul Dravid was unbeaten on 33 at the interval with Sachin Tendulkar (13). India are now 56 runs behind with eight wickets in hand.
Sehwag (56), who added 103 for the opening wicket with Gambhir, fell soon after reaching his 21st Test half-century when he gloved a rising ball from Shahadat Hossain to wicket-keeper Mushfiqur Rahim.
He could add just 15 to his overnight score of 41, hitting eight fours in his 63-ball knock.
Dravid was surprised by a short-pitched delivery from paceman Rubel Hossain, edging it to the slips where Junaid Siddique took a superb catch but it was ruled a no-ball. He was then on 28.
India lead the series 1-0 following their 113-run victory in the opening Test in Chittagong on Thursday.
