Tuskers thwart super Sachin

Mumbai - Kochi Tuskers Kerala stunned the Mumbai Indians by eight wickets at the Wankhede Stadium, as they chased down their target of 183 with an over to spare on Friday.

Kochi’s incredible win was set up beautifully by the experienced duo of skipper Mahela Jayawardene (56 off 35 balls) and the belligerent Brendon McCullum who plundered 81 off 60 balls.

They added a sensational 128 for the first wicket, and though Jayawardene was given a life on 14 by a sprawling Ali Murtaza, they showed remarkably cool heads in chasing down the Indians’daunting total.

McCullum was especially brutal on Lasith Malinga, lashing the Sri Lankan for four boundaries in the third over to get the innings rollicking.

Jayawardene was slightly calmer on the other end, but no less efficient, and the pair brought up the 50 stand on just six overs.

McCullum then brought up his fifty off 41 balls, as a Kochi triumph started to look possible.

By the time Jayawardene was cleaned up by a Malinga yorker, the momentum was with Kochi, and Ravindra Jadeja came in and took them home.

Earlier, a wonderful, maiden IPL hundred for Sachin Tendulkar had seen Mumbai rack up 182 for 2 in their 20 overs, with the Indian megastar reaching his milestone off the last ball of the innings.

He had added 116 for the second wicket with Ambati Rayudu, who clubbed a 33-ball 53 before sacrificing his wicket to allow Tendulkar to get his hundred in the last over.

Tendulkar had taken 43 balls to reach his half-century, but he then blazed his next 50 runs off only 23 balls, as he pulled out an exhibition of wonderful and unusual shots – including a Dhoni-like flick through midwicket, complete with a helicopter whirl at the top.

The hundred also earned Tendulkar the Orange Cap, as he passed Jacques Kallis to be the leading run-scorer at this early stage of the competition.

Despite that wonderful knock, which came off 66 balls with 13 fours and three sixes, Kochi still managed to chase it down with an entire over to spare.

Jayawardene and McCullum took a real liking to Malinga and Kieron Pollard, the big West Indian travelling for 43 in his three overs.

Even when McCullum fell for 81, also bowled by Malinga, Kochi had plenty of batsmen to come.

Brad Hodge and Jadeja took it upon themselves to wrap things up, though, with the latter clubbing two sixes off the last two balls of the 19th over to seal the most satisfying of wins for the Tuskers.
