Tendulkar leads Mumbai home

Mumbai - Sachin Tendulkar’s genius materminded the highest successful run chase of IPL3 as the Mumbai Indians made light work of a target of 181 to beat the Chennai Superkings by five wickets with an over to spare in their IPL match at the Brabourne stadium on Thursday.

Tendulkar led his team to the top of the table with a perfectly paced innings of 72 from just 52 deliveries while opening partner Shikhar Dhawan contributed a pace-setting 56 from a mere 34 balls with five fours and three sixes.

West Indians Kieran Pollard (20 from nine balls) and Dwayne Bravo (14 from seven) made certain of a tension-free finish but it was the certainty and calmness of Tendulkar which did most to ensure the victory.

Earlier a brilliant half century from left hander Suresh Raina propelled the Super Kings to a daunting total of 180-2 in their 20 overs after losing the toss and being sent in to bat by Tendulkar on a pitch he felt might offer assistance to seamers in the first innings.

The 23 year old was in scintillating form from the first ball of his innings which earned him an unbeaten 83 from a mere 52 deliveries on a surface virtually perfect for batting despite Tendulkar’s assertion that it was “a bit sticky”.

Subramanian Badrinath shared a third wicket stand of 142 from just 91 deliveries with a contribution of 55 not out from 45 balls as the Mumbai Indians’ bowlers were put to the sword with international stars Zaheer Khan, Dwayne Bravo and Lasith Malinga all conceding over 10 runs to the over.

Raina struck seven fours and three sixes in leading the assault with Badrinath happy to play the ‘subservient’ role in smashing ‘only’ seven boundaries.

Matthew Hayden gave the Super Kings a flying start with 20 from 12 balls to confirm that, although the veteran Australian may not have reached the heights of last season, he remains a potent force in this format of the game.

The Super Kings have now lost three games in succession and are in danger of falling out of the race for a semifinal place before the tournament has even reached the halfway point.
