Tait bowls Royals to victory

Mohali - Shaun Tait snared three wickets as a stunning collapse from the Kings XI Punjab saw the hosts slump to a 31-run defeat at the hands of the Rajasthan Royals in their IPL match at the Punjab Cricket Association Stadium in Mohali on Wednesday.

Chasing the Royals’ total of 183 for five the home side had looked well set on 107 for two in the 11th over.

But Punjab lost their last eight wickets for the addition of just 45 runs as they were bowled out for 152 with five balls of their innings remaining.

Fast bowler Tait finished with figures of three for 22 off 3.1 overs, a superb comeback for the Australian after he had conceded 15 runs off his second over.

Tait received good support from seamer Siddharth Trivedi and off-spinner Yusuf Pathan with both men picking up two wickets.

Punjab had come out all guns blazing as opening batsman Kumar Sangakkara blitzed his way to 29 off 13 balls before he uppercut a short ball from Tait to Faiz Fazal at third man.

Manvinder Bisla picked up where Sangakkara left off and the 25-year-old smashed two sixes and four boundaries in his innings of 35 off 18 balls.

But the right-handed batsman’s assault was ended when he slapped a Shane Warne delivery to Michael Lumb at deep midwicket to leave the home side on 85 for two.

Ravi Bopara (25) and Yuvraj Singh added 22 runs for the third-wicket before Yuvraj (15) skied a Trivedi delivery to long-on to herald the start of Punjab’s collapse.

Mahela Jayawardene (23) was the only other Punjab batsman to reach double figures.

Earlier, the Royals had a late onslaught from Adam Voges to thank for their final total.

Voges, who sent the first ball that he faced fizzing through midwicket for four, bashed his way to 45 not out off a mere 24 deliveries.

The right-handed Australian combined excellent placement with some devastating leg-side hitting to help himself to five fours and a six during his intelligent knock.

Voges and Fazal shared in a fourth-wicket stand that produced 60 runs with Fazal compiling a patient 45 off 38 balls before being run out at the keeper’s end after a direct hit from Piyush Chawla fielding at long-off.

The Royals, after being asked to bat, were given a good start to their innings thanks to English opening batsman Lumb who powered his way to 41 off 30 balls.

The Johannesburg-born Lumb eventually fell when he was dragged out of his crease by a delivery from leg-spinner Chawla to allow keeper Sangakkara to complete a sharp stumping.

Fazal and Pathan (28) built on Lumb’s good start with a third-wicket partnership of 51 before Pathan holed out to long-on.

South African seamer Rusty Theron was the most economical Punjab bowler as he returned figures of none for 25 off his four overs while Chawla and the pace duo of Shanthakumaran Sreesanth and Shalabh Srivastava all picked up a wicket each.

The Royals, after losing their first three matches on the trot, have now won two in a row and are back in the semifinal hunt as they join a group of three other teams on four points.

Punjab’s miserable tournament continues as they have just one win from five matches.
