Super Kings down Daredevils

Delhi - The Chennai Super Kings chased down their target of 186 with five balls to spare in their Indian Premier League match against the Delhi Daredevils on Friday, thanks largely to Australian batsman Matthew Hayden.

Opener Hayden's use of a long-handled, short-bladed Mongoose bat did nothing to limit his famed hitting prowess, and his 93 off 43 deliveries ensured the Super Kings were always level with or ahead of the required run-rate of 9.3 per over.

Hayden's knock featured nine fours and seven sixes, most of which disappeared high into the Feroz Shah Kotlas stands.

Once he had hit Tillakaratne Dilshan for three sixes in the eighth over, which produced 21 for the visitors, there was no way the Super Kings were going to lose unless a flurry of wickets fell.

But only in the 14th over did Hayden get out, by which time the job was as good as done with the score at 142/3.

South Africans Albie Morkel (nought off three balls) and Justin Kemp (four off eight balls) were then dismissed before Super Kings captain Suresh Raina ended proceedings with a six off the first ball of the final over.

The Super Kings ended the game on 190/5, as Raina enjoyed a winning debut as captain. Not only did he keep things together with 49 runs of his own, but he'd earlier taken three catches when the Daredevils batted.

AB de Villiers may have failed with the bat for the Daredevils, making only two runs, but he did manage to effect a superb direct-hit run-out to get rid of Hayden's opening partner Parthiv Patel in the third over of the Super Kings reply. But with Hayden in such a hungry mood at the other end, the dismissal had little impact on the final result.

Australian Dirk Nannes does deserve a mention for his bowling efforts in the Daredevils' losing effort. His four overs cost his side just 18 runs.

Earlier, a typically fiery innings of 74 by Virender Sehwag saw the Daredevils reach 185/6 off their 20 overs after they elected to bat first.

Opening batsman Sehwag helped the home side get their run-rate above 10 to the over in the early going, as partner David Warner supported him from the other end before getting out for six with the score on 35.

The Super Kings pulled things back a little from the ninth over, when Albie Morkel and then Muttiah Muralitharan bowled boundary-free overs. Dilshan then fell to Murali in the 12th over before the Super Kings dismissed big fish Sehwag two balls later. His 74 came from 38 balls, featuring 10 fours and three sixes.

With the run-rate now having dropped below nine, Mithun Manhas took responsibility for getting the scoreboard ticking again. He scored five stylish boundaries, staying alive until the end and finishing on 32 not out. His undefeated 22-ball innings helped the final scoring rate up to 9.25 at the end of the Daredevils knock.

South African Justin Kemp did not have a great time with the ball, going for 14 off his lone over, but he did produce an outstanding catch on the long-off boundary to get rid of Sehwag. His compatriot Morkel went for 26 from his three overs. Meanwhile, Muralitharan was the pick of the Super Kings bowlers, going for just 25 in his four overs.
