Hyderabad - The Mumbai Indians' slick fielding and bowling saw them to a comfortable 37-run win over the Deccan Chargers in on Sunday.
Lasith Malinga, who retired from Test cricket this week, returned excellent figures of 3 for 9 in his four overs, to break the back of the Deccan chase.
Malinga also effected a run out, throwing down the stumps from wide mid-off to find the out of form Cameron White short of his ground.
Earlier, a blistering stand of 102 between Rohit Sharma and Andrew Symonds saw the Mumbai outfit recover from a parlous 70 for 4, after losing three wickets for no run in a mid-innings wobble.
But Sharma and Symonds steadied the ship first, before bludgeoning 70 runs off the last five overs to give the total a significant turbo-charge.
Davy Jacobs and birthday boy Sachin Tendulkar made a fine start, adding 47 in the first five overs. Jacobs clubbed 32 off 20 balls, smashing a six and five fours as he looked in far better fettle.
The South African fell trying to hoist Ishant Sharma into the stands, and was caught by Ojha at long-on.
Ambati Rayudu joined skipper Tendulkar, and they took matters to 70, before things fell apart dramatically.
Tendulkar skied Mishra to long-on, where Dale Steyn held the skier, before Rayudu was caught on the square-leg boundary two balls later off a flat, hard sweep.
Kieron Pollard then tried a nifty leg-side flick, off Ojha, but he only got the toe of the bat on the ball, and Sangakarra took the running catch with much delight.
At 70 for 4, the Indians were in danger of crumbling. But Symonds (44 off 33 balls) and the scintillating Sharma (56 off 34 balls) added 102 off just 65 balls to put gloss on the innings.
Sharma clubbed Daniel Christian for 24 off the last over, including three towering sixes, reaching his fifty off just 33 balls in the process.
The Deccan chase never really got going, as Sunny Sohal was expertly run out by Pollard's sharp throw from point in the second over.
Malinga then castled an ominous looking Shikhar Dhawan for 25 off just 22 balls, before the Sri Lankan slinger ran out White for a single run.
Bharat Chipli then slapped Pollard straight to point, as Deccan found themselves at the very same 70 for 4 that Mumbai had been at before Sharma and Symonds changed the course of the match.
But Malinga bowled international teammate Sangakarra with a low full-toss in the 14th over for 34 off 28 balls, to really halt the Deccan attempt at a charge.
Daniel Christian was quite brilliantly stumped by Jacobs off Patel, and Malinga got his third scalp when he bamboozled Teja with a slower ball, the batsman looping a simple return catch to Malinga.
Dale Steyn was then run out by Symonds, but the match was well and truly in the bag for Mumbai by that stage.
