Johannesburg - New Zealand all-rounder Jesse Ryder, has been involved in an off-field incident in South Africa prompting mentor Murray Deaker to make a statement referring to "sobriety".

Radio Sport and Newstalk ZB understand Ryder, who plays for the Bangalore Royal Challengers, had to be restrained by security guards.

Ryder's manager Aaron Klee has not returned calls.

Deaker said in his statement: "Jesse's had over a hundred days of sobriety and has made enormous progress during that time, on and off the field.

"Now for that to continue he needs support and moves have already been made to assist him to get back on top."

Ryder has had alcohol related problems in the past, including injuring his hand on a glass window during the series against England last year.
