Delhi - The value of the Protea as one of the top brands in world cricket was confirmed on Saturday when the Indian Premier League’s (IPL) two-day auction got underway.
The Proteas’ players were much in demand when the franchise bidding started with Dale Steyn attracting one of the top prices for an overseas player of $1.2-million in being knocked down to the Deccan Chargers.
AB de Villiers (Royal Challengers Bangalore) and Jacques Kallis (Kolkata Knight Riders) also attracted top prices in both going for $1.1-million.
Johan Botha, the new captain of the Proteas’ Standard Bank International Pro20 squad, also attracted a lot of interest before being retained by the Rajasthan Royals franchise for $950 000.
Others Proteas to attract successful bids were:
Graeme Smith (Pune) $500 000, Morne Morkel (Delhi Daredevils) $475 000 and JP Duminy (Deccan Chargers) $300 000.
Uncapped Davy Jacobs, following his brilliant campaign for the Chevrolet Warriors in last year’s Champions’ League tournament, attracted a successful bid of $190 000 from the Mumbai Indians.
Albie Morkel was retained by the Chennai Super Kings under the special IPL rules and was thus not available for the auction.
A number of other South African players will go under the hammer on the second day of the auction on Sunday.
