Mumbai - A thoroughly professional show in the field saw the Mumbai Indians seal their passage to the IPL semi-finals with a 37-run win over the Rajasthan Royals on Sunday.
After Sachin Tendulkar had inspired a late charge in their own innings, the Mumbai outfit showed exactly why they are top of the pops with sharp fielding and clever bowling the order of the day.
Tendulkar’s classy 89 off 59 balls had earlier given the Indians a platform to end on 174 for 5, on a slow pitch.
The Indian master blaster breached 500 runs in the process for the 2010 edition, snatching the orange cap off the brow of Jacques Kallis in the process.
Tendulkar received handy support from JP Duminy (31) and Kieron Pollard (25), but he hit the turbo button in the final over, smashing 20 off it to finish the innings with a real flourish.
Rajasthan, for their part, were absolutely abysmal.
The inaugural IPL champions made a terrible start to their chase, as they were reduced to 11 for three as early as the third over.
Aussie star Shane Watson’s dismissal summed up the carnage, as he was done in by a direct hit by keeper Ambatu Rayudu after attempting a single that was never there.
Rayudu was involved in another run out – that of the dangerous Abhishek Jhunjhunwala – as the Royals hit the self destruct button.
Adam Voges added some respectability to the total with 28, and Aditya Dole hit a breezy 30 when the game was already up.
But, the match was all about the Mumbai side reaching the final four for the first time.
Led brilliantly by the peerless Tendulkar, they handed the Royals their first ever loss in Jaipur, and will be very hard to stop on this form.
The Royals now need to win their last two matches to have a chance of joining them in the final four.
