Bloemfontein - Knights cricket captain Ryan McLaren has been contracted by the Kings XI Punjab as allrounder for the coming Indian Premier League (IPL).
The move for McLaren comes after Stuart Broad and Dimitri Mascarenhas of England had to withdraw from this year’s fourth tournament.
Broad picked up an injury in the World Cup, while Mascarenhas has not recovered sufficiently from a heel injury.
McLaren (28) revealed on Tuesday that he had been approached over the weekend. The Proteas allrounder previously played for the Mumbai Indians.
His former franchise phoned him just before this year’s auction to ask him about Davy Jacobs. However, nobody bid for McLaren in the auction that followed.
The Kings XI Punjab are not allowed to offer him less than his opening price of R700 000, which is the same amount that Mascarenhas was sold for.
“Hopefully I can now kick open a door for the future,” McLaren said on Tuesday.
He missed the Knights’ training session on Tuesday because he was in Johannesburg to get his paperwork and visa in order for India and England.
McLaren will play T20 cricket for English county side Middlesex after the IPL.
Meanwhile, McLaren has had to withdraw him from the South Africa A side that will host Bangladesh next month.
Andrew Birch of the Warriors will replace McLaren in the two four-day games, while the Dolphins’ Kyle Abott has been picked in his place for the one-day series.
McLaren will only depart after the Knights’ last SuperSport game this week against the Titans in Benoni. He will board a plane for India on either Sunday or Monday.
McLaren is the only Protea in the Kings XI Punjab whol play their first game against the Pune Warriors in Mumbai on 10 April.
Test captain Graeme Smith, Wayne Parnell and Alfonso Thomas are the South Africans in the Pune squad.
