Gayle's 175* in a nutshell

Johannesburg - On Monday, April 22, 2013, Chris Gayle rewrote the record books with a mind-blowing 175 not out in the IPL match between the Royal Challengers Bangalore and Pune Warriors at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, reports the supersport.com website.

Only two batsmen have previously crossed the 150-run line in the games shortest format: Brendon McCullum did it in the opening match of the 2008 IPL between Kolkata and Bangalore, scoring 158 not out, and Graeme Napier posted an unbeaten 152 for Essex against Sussex in the same year.

Gayle reached the triple-figure mark off 30 deliveries - this is four balls fewer than Andrew Symonds's effort for Kent against Middlesex in 2004. Yusuf Pathan scored a T20 century off 37 balls in 2010.

Gayle drew level with Adam Gilchrist at the 50-run mark, having faced 17 balls. The ex-Australian wicketkeeper did it in 2009 against the Delhi Daredevils.

With 17 sixes, Gayle also surpassed the previous maximum number of sixes hit in an innings, 16, which Napier set during his above-mentioned knock. This feat enabled the West Indian to become the only player in T20 cricket who scored 100 runs in sixes alone.

More records were smashed to pieces as Gayle also hit 13 fours, bringing his total number of runs scored via the boundary to 154 - the most in a T20 innings. He is also the only player in the shortest format to have twice scored 100 in boundaries alone.
