Delhi slump to heavy defeat

Mumbai - The Delhi Daredevils suffered a horrendous middle-order collapse to slump to a 39-run defeat at the hands of the Mumbai Indians in their IPL match at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai on Tuesday.

Left-arm spinner Ali Murtaza, who captured two for 18 off four overs, was at the heart of the collapse that saw the visitors stumble from 72 for one to 94 for six in the space of 5.2 overs.

Chasing Mumbai’s total of 183 for four Delhi fell miserably short as they staggered to 144 for seven.

The home side’s bowlers maintained such an effective line and length that Delhi failed to score a boundary between the sixth and 20th over before Andrew McDonald hit a six to the long-off boundary.

David Warner had given Delhi the perfect start to their run-chase as he blazed his way to 31 off 15 balls before skiing a delivery from fast bowler Dilhara Fernando to long-off.

Virender Sehwag (20) and Gautam Gambhir (17) built on Warner’s good work with a second-wicket stand of 33 before both men fell in the space of six balls to herald the start of Delhi’s implosion.

Gambhir offered up a simple caught and bowled effort to off-spinner Harbhajan Singh before Sehwag was run out at the keeper’s end after a superb throw form Kieron Pollard at long-on.

AB de Villiers’ (4) poor run of form continued when he was trapped leg-before by Murtaza before the spinner bowled the in-form Dinesh Karthik (11).

McDonald was the only other batsman to offer much in the way of resistance as he ended on 33 not out.

Fernando ended with figures of two for 32 while Pollard’s miserly medium-pace earned the big West Indian figures of none for 15 off four overs.

Earlier, Mumbai owed their final total to a blistering late assault from Pollard who blasted his way to 45 not out off 13 balls.

A combination of accurate bowling and a slow wicket had seen Mumbai labour to 133 for four after 17 overs before Pollard strolled to the crease.

Pollard, who had yet to make an impression in the tournament, finally showed glimpses of his big-hitting ability as he smashed two fours and five sixes during his knock.

The right-handed Pollard really opened his shoulders in the last over as he helped himself to three sixes and a four off medium-pacer McDonald as a total of 25 runs were scored off the over.

Pollard and JP Duminy combined for an unbroken fifth-wicket stand of 50 off just 18 balls with Duminy ending not out on 21 off 14 balls.

After winning the toss and electing to bat, Mumbai were given a solid start thanks to a 41-run opening stand between Sachin Tendulkar (30) and debutant Chandan Madan (15).

Saurabh Tiwary (38) and Ambati Rayudu (24) then made useful contributions to provide the platform for Pollard’s assault.

McDonald had enjoyed a good day until being called upon to bowl the final over with his first three overs costing just 17 runs.
