Delhi - Sachin Tendulkar and Saurabh Tiwary struck contrasting half-centuries to set up a comprehensive 98-run win for the Mumbai Indians in their IPL match against the Delhi Daredevils at the Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium in Delhi on Wednesday.
Tendulkar was all finesse as he scored 63 off 32 deliveries while Tiwary bludgeoned his way to 61 off 37 balls as Mumbai posted a formidable 218 for seven.
In reply, Delhi were never in the contest as they slumped to 120 all out in 16.3 overs with seamer Dwayne Bravo, left-arm spinner Sanath Jayasuriya and off-spinner Harbhajan Singh all finishing with two wickets.
The home side’s cause was not helped by the hamstring injury suffered by their captain Gautam Gambhir in the first over of the match which meant that he was unable to bat.
The victory ensured that Mumbai moved to the top of the IPL standings after two wins from two matches.
Tendulkar struck 11 fours in his masterful innings before he mistimed a lofted drive off a delivery from leg-spinner Amit Mishra and was caught at long-off.
The 36-year-old batsman fell in the 11th over to leave Mumbai on 122 for three but Delhi’s bowlers continued to suffer as Tiwary and Ambati Rayudu (34) plundered 71 runs for the fourth wicket off 6.5 overs.
The left-handed Tiwary scored his second consecutive half-century of the tournament before he was run out by a direct hit from keeper Dinesh Karthik while attempting a sharp single.
Tiwary smashed four fours and three sixes during his knock but his effort was overshadowed by Tendulkar’s sheer class.
Tendulkar, who was dropped by Mishra at point with his score on 36, put on a superb exhibition of batting as the majority of his boundaries came about through timing and placement as opposed to brute strength.
The right-handed batsman was in a positive frame of mind from the moment he arrived at the crease, after Mumbai had been asked to bat, with his first scoring shot a four past point.
Tendulkar, who reached his fifty off just 23 deliveries, dominated an opening stand of 38 he shared with Jayasuriya (7) before the left-handed Jayasuriya fell to a stunning catch from 12th man Yogesh Nagar at mid-off who flung himself backwards to take a one-handed grab.
All Delhi’s bowlers suffered during the innings with left-arm quick Dirk Nannes the only man to concede less than 10 runs to the over while seamer Farveez Maharoof and leg-spinner Sarabjit Ladda finished with two wickets apiece.
Delhi made a reasonable start to their innings thanks to a first-wicket stand of 38 between Virender Sehwag (26) and Tillakaratne Dilshan (17).
But Dilshan was bowled by paceman Lasith Malinga in the fourth over before Bravo removed Sehwag and AB de Villiers (11) in the space of five balls.
Only Maharoof, with 28 off 18 balls, held up Mumbai’s charge for victory but he became the sixth wicket to fall when he was stumped off a Jayasuriya delivery as Delhi’s innings petered out with the hosts losing their last eight wickets for the addition of just 64 runs.
