Delhi crush Bangalore

The Bangalore Royal Challengers were reeled in by probing Delhi Daredevils bowling as they succumbed by 37 runs in their Indian Premier League match at the Feroz Shah Kotla on Sunday.

Bangalore created a rod for their own backs with a poor performance in the field and often untidy bowling which saw Delhi post 184 for five. And even though Jacques Kallis scored his fifth half-century of the tournament, the run-chase was shaped by the tight bowling of medium-pacers Pradeep Sangwan and Rajat Bhatia and spinner Amit Mishra, with superb backing in the field.

Delhi have now overtaken Bangalore and moved into second place on the standings, two behind the Mumbai Indians.

On a flat pitch which encouraged the slower bowlers, leggie Mishra was the first to irritate the Challengers, taking the new ball and conceding just eight runs in two overs and claiming the wicket of Cameron White, caught at long-off for four.

Kevin Pietersen then came in and played a stodgy innings of 16 off 19 balls, picking up a bruised toe from a Farveez Maharoof yorker in the process, before Sangwan bowled him with an excellent yorker.

Robin Uthappa scored 12 before then getting a big fat leading edge to Sangwan, David Warner taking a fine catch dashing in from long-on.

Kallis, who had looked in prime touch as he rushed to 20 not out off 11 balls with four superb drives to the boundary, had his momentum killed as Delhi took the pace off the ball and he had to be content with just nudging the ball around as he completed a 38-ball half-century.

Ross Taylor then joined Kallis and was quickly purring along as he lashed 22 off 10 balls before Bhatia trapped him leg-before in what looked a tough call by umpire Billy Bowden, Taylor's fellow New Zealander.

Bangalore went into the last five overs seeking 74 runs and it was Sangwan who ended their chances when he had Kallis caught at long-off for 54 off 42 balls. The South African all-rounder had started well, but grew increasingly frustrated as he seemed to get caught up in Pietersen's struggles. Their partnership of 27 in 5.5 overs was probably where the Daredevils took control of the match.

Virat Kohli was bowled for 13 as his swipe across the line was nowhere near a Maharoof delivery that tailed back in, and Vinay Kumar (3), Rahul Dravid (14) and Abhimanyu Mithun (5) all fell in the last two overs having big fat slogs.

Left-arm seamer Sangwan was the best of the Delhi bowlers, hardly having a shot in anger played against him as he finished with superb figures of three for 22 in four overs.

Dibby-dobbly Bhatia took one for 24 as the batsmen struggled to get into gear against him, and Mishra finished with three for 32 and is now in front of the queue in terms of leading wicket-takers.

Sri Lankan paceman Maharoof took one for 28 in his four overs.

The finishing skills of Paul Collingwood had earlier carried the Delhi Daredevils to 184 for five.

Collingwood's pugnacious 75 not out off 46 balls was obviously vital due to the regular loss of wickets Delhi suffered after they had won the toss and chosen to bat first.

Virender Sehwag roared to 35 off 22 balls before being bowled by a sharp Abhimanyu delivery that jagged back into him. Fellow opener Warner then started ripping into the bowling as he lashed 33 off 22 balls before holing out at long-on off Anil Kumble.

Delhi also suffered the frustration of having captain Gautam Gambhir run out for just a single, KP Appanna scoring a direct hit running in from cover-point.

Appanna, who was the best of the Bangalore bowlers with one for 24 in his four overs, then had the dangerous Dinesh Karthik caught at short-extra-cover for six, White taking the sharpest of catches diving low to his left.

When sharp work by wicketkeeper Uthappa ran out Kedar Jadhav for seven, Delhi had slipped to 125 for five in the 15th over, but Collingwood proved once again that he is one of the foremost batsmen in limited-overs cricket when it comes to finishing an innings.

New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori gave him valuable support with 19 not out off 17 balls as 60 runs were added for the unbroken sixth wicket in five-and-a-half overs.
