Delhi - The Deccan Chargers secured their place in the Indian Premier League semi-finals as they edged past the Delhi Daredevils by 11 runs in their match at the Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium in Delhi on Sunday.
Chasing the Chargers’ total of 145 for seven, a half-century from Paul Collingwood meant that Delhi began the last over of their innings needing 17 runs to win the match.
But left-arm quick Chaminda Vaas sent down a superb over to concede just five runs as Delhi totalled 134 for seven.
The win propelled the visitors into second place on the IPL log after completing their group matches while Delhi’s participation in the tournament was ended as they dropped to fifth place.
Collingwood eventually scored 51 not out off 41 balls but he enjoyed his fair share of luck as he was dropped three times during his innings.
Delhi made a disastrous start to their run-chase as the staggered to 39 for four.
Collingwood and Mithun Manhas (23) restored some respectability to the score thanks to a fifth-wicket stand that produced 29 runs before Manhas was run out at the non-striker’s end thanks to a throw from Mitchell Marsh fielding at extra cover.
Four runs later left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha bowled Dinesh Karthik (1) as the home side slumped to 72 for six before Collingwood and Ashish Nehra (22 not out off 16 balls) put on an unbroken stand of 48 off 4.5 overs.
However, their efforts proved to be in vain as the Chargers clinched their fifth consecutive win.
Ojha, the tournament’s leading wicket-taker, finished with two for 16 off four overs while seamer Harmeet Singh picked up two for 41.
Earlier, an aggressive half-century from Andrew Symonds provided the bulk of the Chargers’ runs
Symonds, who brought up his fifty off 26 balls, eventually raced to 54 off 30 balls before he smashed a delivery from leg-spinner Amit Mishra straight to Mithun Manhas at long-off.
The 34-year-old batsman smote three fours and five sixes during his knock with perhaps his most impressive shot a massive six he struck off Mishra which sailed over long-off and into the top tier of the grandstand.
Symonds and Marsh (13) put on 50 runs for the fifth-wicket before Symond’s dismissal in the 15th over.
Symond’s departure seemed to knock the stuffing out of the Chargers as they managed to cobble together just 28 runs for the loss of two wickets off the last five overs of their innings.
The Chargers had lost wickets at regular intervals early in their innings to slip to 66 for four after nine overs with paceman Umesh Yadav responsible for most of the early damage.
With his first ball Yadav bowled Tirumalasetti Suman (5) and in his next over he had the in-form Rohit Sharma (11) caught behind by keeper Dinesh Karthik.
Opening batsman Monish Mishra threatened to break loose with his knock of 25 off 19 balls but he became the fourth wicket to fall when he was run out at the non-striker’s end by a direct hit from Manhas fielding at mid-off.
Yadav ended the innings with figures of two for 24 while left-arm quick Ashish Nehra picked up two for 32.
