Nagpur - A disciplined bowling performance helped the Deccan Chargers overcome the Royal Challengers Bangalore by 13 runs in their IPL match at the Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium in Nagpur on Monday.
Bangalore, chasing the Chargers’ total of 151 for six, had looked well in control of the match as they reached 74 for one in the 11th over.
But a stunning collapse, that saw the visitors lose eight wickets for 64 runs, meant that Bangalore were only able to cobble together 138 all out with two balls of their innings remaining.
The pace trio of Ryan Harris, Rudra Pratap Singh and Harmeet Singh and left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha all finished with two wickets each with Ojha, the tournament’s leading wicket-taker, extracting appreciable bounce and turn to pick up two for 22 off four overs.
Jacques Kallis and Rahul Dravid had put on 74 runs for the second wicket before Dravid lofted a delivery from medium-pacer Andrew Symonds to long-off.
Dravid compiled an elegant 49 off 35 balls with his knock including eight fours while Kallis took his time in scoring 27 off 37 balls before he holed out to long-on off the bowling of Ojha.
Dravid’s dismissal heralded the start of Bangalore’s batting woes with only Robin Uthappa, who blitzed his way to 34 off 24 balls, offering much in the way of resistance.
Earlier, a superb new ball spell from Dale Steyn looked to have given Bangalore the upper hand.
Paceman Steyn tore through the Chargers’ top-order as his first spell yielded figures of three for 13 off three overs.
Steyn struck in the first over of the match when he claimed two wickets in two balls as Adam Gilchrist (0) sent the faintest of outside edges through to keeper Uthappa before Tirumalasetti Suman (0) fended a short ball to short square leg.
Steyn was just warming up and in his second over he bowled Herschelle Gibbs (12) with a ball that beat the batsman for pace as the home side slumped to 14 for three.
The 26-year-old South African eventually ended the innings with figures of three for 18 off four overs.
With the Chargers struggling Monish Mishra and Rohit Sharma repaired the damage with a fourth-wicket stand of 82 off 10 overs
But a mix-up between the two batsmen saw Mishra run out at the keeper’s end after throw from Steyn at long-off.
Mishra had entertained with his knock of 41 off 30 balls and Sharma brought up his second half-century of this season’s IPL off 44 balls.
But the right-handed batsman departed in the 19th over when he slammed a delivery from seamer Vinay Kumar to a wide long-on to be dismissed for 51 off 46 deliveries.
Vinay Kumar returned the economical figures of one for 19 off three overs but Kallis was expensive as his four overs cost 40 runs.
The win maintains the Chargers’ hopes of reaching the semifinals as they move into fifth place on the log, on 12 points. Bangalore, also on 12 points, remain in second place thanks to a superior net run-rate.
