The Deccan Chargers won a thrilling contest against a defiant Kings XI Punjab in Deccan on Friday by six runs.
Having set the Punjab outfit 171 to win, the Deccan Chargers made a cracking start with early wickets tumbling, but a whirlwind cameo by the ‘other Pathan’, Irfan, almost stole the points for Punjab.
Pathan cracked 5 sixes and three boundaries as he rattled up 60 off just 29 balls, after the visitors had made a dismal start.
Chaminda Vaas continued his fine form with the new ball, as he knocked over the key duo of Yuvraj Singh and Kumar Sangakarra in his first spell.
At 22 for 3 after just 5 overs, the Kings XI looked out of it, but Pathan ensured a thrilling finish.
But when he fell off the first ball of the final over, the game was up for the Punjab outfit.
Earlier, a brisk 53 by Andrew Symonds had pushed the Chargers beyond 150, as they hustled their way to a highly competitive 170 for 7.
Ultimately, that proved just enough as only Ravi Bopara (38) joined Pathan in putting up any resistance.
Teams:
Deccan Chargers: AC Gilchrist (capt &wk), VVS Laxman, HH Gibbs, A Symonds, RG Sharma, TL Suman, Anirudh Singh, PP Ojha, Jaskaran Singh, WPUJC Vaas, RP Singh
Kings XI Punjab: KC Sangakkara (capt & wk), RS Bopara, AB Barath, MS Bisla, Yuvraj Singh, DPMD Jayawardene, IK Pathan, PP Chawla, Bipul Sharma, SJ Srivastava, S Sreesanth
