Botha joins Rajasthan Royals

2009-05-14 09:20

Cape Town - Proteas off-spinner Johan Botha has been signed by the reigning IPL champion Rajasthan Royals after being cleared by the ICC.

Botha was recently cited for his bowling action, but tests in Australia found that, with one exception, there is no problem.

The exception is Botha’s doosra, the delivery that turns away from the right-hand batsmen. He has been banned from bowling this delivery.

Shane Warne, captain-coach of the Royals said, "Johan Botha is a sensational player and we were disappointed when he couldn't be part of our squad at the start of the tournament. It is a real boost that he can now make an impact when called upon. "

Botha has become a key performer for South Africa in the middle overs of 50-over ODI matches with his ability to stop opposition sides from scoring.

He is effective in Twenty20 cricket, too, with his batting and fielding skills making him a quality performer.

I just hope that the banning of his doosra doesn't have a negative impact on his overall performance and that he remains as effective as he was prior to the idiotic citing.

Why Shane Warne not this crook, I will never watch IPL in my life again. Can't believe this!!

  • Frank - 2009-05-14 09:51

Great stuff, with him and Warnie, what a combination.

@FRANK - coulnt agree more - 2 of the best!

  • Paddy - 2009-05-14 10:24

Johan Botha is an exciting player and so pleased he is able to play in the IPL! @Anon user: Who is a crook? Why won't you watch IPL ever again?

  • Anonymous User - 2009-05-14 10:30

That's it ... have shane warne show him how to bowl spin. Teach chuckie(botha) how to be a real spin bowler.

  • tom - 2009-05-14 10:43

Wecome back Johann ...Lookin forward to watching you play again ,

The funniest thing is, and i really do find this peculiar, is that Botha claims to have only bowled the Doosra once in the two games he was called for throwing in. So clearly he's a damn good bowler without needing to resort to that ball, but it also begs the question how or why he was called in the first place. Great to see Johan in the royals set up, he's a great cricketer, lets hope there is enough time left for him to make his mark on the tournament.

  • Marnus - 2009-05-14 10:57

So glad he's back! Johan is one of the better spinners in world cricket at the moment. @ the anonymous 09:46 and 10:30 cowards, you clearly have no clue what's going on in the world of cricket. One can only laugh at your ignorance.

  • Anonymous User - 2009-05-14 11:02

Yeah baby - great to have him back. With Warne and Botha in tandem, the Royals are going to do a lot better!

  • Anonymous User - 2009-05-14 11:11

All the bowlers with suspect bowling actions are playing for the Royals. Now Botha joins them. Coincidence ?????

  • Frost - 2009-05-14 11:28

Great! Now Shane Warne's coaching ability will also be uplifted by Botha's qualities! Go Botha! Just a pitty you had to be dragged through all of that.....again!

  • Anonymous User - 2009-05-14 12:13

i love to know what makes us cowards @ marnus ... u must be a supporter of chuckie(botha), otherwise u wouldn't get so temperamental ...

  • Botha for captain - 2009-05-14 12:35

Extremely good news. Well done Johan. It's what you deserve. Let me reiterate. Botha for S.A Captain!!! (Nothing against Biff, he's a super batsmen)

  • Gene - 2009-05-14 13:02

At Anonymous User @ 12:13. You are a coward because you dont use your name a******. Are you stupid or what?

  • Anonymous User - 2009-05-14 13:09

Warne has cheated with the bookies (covered up for 5 years by Cricket Australia), cheated with drugs ("my mother made me take them"), cheated on his wife (serially). Yet he is the "greatest spin bowler ever" (ranked 107th in all time test bowling averages and 125th i.t.o. strike rates) according to his countrymen who are the very ones who have started the cheating allegations against Botha. Sport is a farce when the convicts are involved.

Great stuff. Can't wait to see botha back in action. Royals to take the title again

  • wern - 2009-05-14 13:47

Funny how everybody so far that didn't have anything good to say about Johann didn't want to show their names. What are you scared of. All the best to johann

  • cas - 2009-05-14 15:17

To all anti-Johan anonymous contributers - get lost!! He is the best and should in fact be captaining the Proteas in all games to give Fingers Smith a chance to concentrate on his batting.

  • Gerald - 2009-05-14 15:33

I have just seen Murali get Boucher caught at slip from his doosra and his arm is more bent at the elbow than I have ever seen Botha's and some Anonymous on this forum dares call Botha a chucker?

  • Frost - 2009-05-14 17:39

Anyone know who the Sharks are playing this weekend?
