2012-05-06 21:07

Bangalore - AB de Villiers's late assault lifted the Royal Challengers Bangalore to a five-wicket win over the Deccan Chargers in their Indian Premier League clash here on Sunday.

Opening batsman Shikhar Dhawan's unbeaten 73 gave the Chargers a formidable total of 181-2 but De Villiers struck a 17-ball 47 not out that included 23 off fellow South African Dale Steyn's last over to reach 185-5 in 18.5 overs. De Villiers hit five fours and three sixes.

Sri Lankan Tillakaratne Dilshan (71) and Chris Gayle (26) laid a solid platform of 91 runs for the Royal Challengers' opening wicket before De Villiers cut loose when 39 was needed off the last three overs.

While the Chargers lie bottom of the table with five points, the Royal Challengers increased their chances of making the knockout stage with 11 points.

AB was unbelievable. Why is he coming in so late? Stupid captain?

      That knock deserves the car.

AB should bat at 3. It would take a lot of the heat off Virat Kohli. For some reason, he seems renowned as a slogger at the end. But if you look at recent matches, he's played two sustained and controlled innings that took RCB to victory. I can't remember the opponents but in one innings AB partnered Gayle and they made 9 an over seem a doddle with risk-free cricket. In the other innings, he partnered Dilshan and they again went along at an amazing lick without playing rash shots. Surely that's what you want from a number 3 - and what RCB aren't getting from Virat at the moment? What a bizarre spell it was for Dale Steyn. He bowled 18 balls. Nine were dots and the other nine were smashed for thirty. Dale must surely be the only bowler in the history of the IPL to have bowled a maiden to Chris Gayle - and then been tanked for 23 in his next over. Too bad Morne Morkel's purple cap spell is over. I get the feeling that Slinga is going to open up daylight between himself and the rest from here on in, just like he did last year.

Well done AB!...Nothing bizarre about Steyns performance...he has been poor when batsmen attack him..happened numerous times now for the chargers in this IPL

      Deon - 2012-05-07 08:20

AB is a great finisher, he came in the right time.

Agree Johan they are bringing him in to late. He is even bemused listening to him in a earlier interview.

I'm speechless after that. Wow. Proudly South-African!

      Gunner - 2012-05-07 07:11

      Not with Steyns performance

      Jacques - 2012-05-07 07:27

He bowled a maiden to Gayle... 'Nuff said

      Deon - 2012-05-07 08:18

Steyn bowled well, not many people can hit a yorker for 6.

Great play AB, a very good knock indeed. I am indeed proud of my country's 20/20 captain, he is a class act, and he certainly showed everybody that he can be a "gayle" force himself on any given day. I was very harsh on him during the previous world cup in the West Indies for having been given out after a failed sweep shot, a shot he likes so much these days, but he has indeed perfected that shot, even though it is risky at times. He might even be the best player of the reverse sweep shot in the world at this stage, he even smashed it for a six or two in this IPL. Dale had no answer for him, I really felt sorry for Dale, but at the same time I also got worried, if our best bowler gets smashed for five boundaries in one over after a maiden against Gayle, which the commentators gave him a lot of credit for, should we attribute that to AB's class or Steyn's weakness against quality bastmen, and this is only an honest question and not a suggestion that Dale is poor at all, he is a very good bowler, but maybe he is overrated by our praise singers. I believe AB us one of our best players in the IPL, and I also hope Albie Morkel can get loose soon as well, we all know what he is capable off.

      Gunner - 2012-05-07 12:13

Well said Vincent, AB is definitely a class act and I enjoy every bit of his game. Just feel Steyn is overrated when it comes to shorter form of the game. When batsmen tend to respect him on his Test cricket reputation , he performs well BUT when they attack him especially in T20 format he comes out second best...like I said before, it has happened on many occasions already in this IPL...The Proteas think tank must consider this before T20 world cup. He may perform well against the lesser sides there but may get punished against the better sides/players..
